    it worked on everything except i still have to hit the flash button if i want flash

    It should pop up in Auto mode. But aperture/shutter priority are probably still manual.

    it doesn't, and the flash seems to overwhelm the camera

    You're sure you've got the camera set to the 'green camera' mode? There are other modes that are automatic but won't always fire the flash.

    Looks like you're awfully close to the rifle. That could also explain why the flash has over powered your subject. Back up a few feet and use the zoom of the lens.

    in the auto mode, the camera will compensate for the flash. in any other mode, you have to change the settings to compensate for the flash. also, the flash does have settings you can alter so you are not at full power.

    Pop the flash up and cover it with wax paper or gauze, or something like it if you have to stay close to the subject, it will tone it down. You could also put a white 3x5 card in front ot it and bounce the flash off the ceiling.

    you should get some compensation for that. yeah its flattering, but in the end/future, you should get something back for that.
