Personally I wouldn't use the filters

Also the for the most part the wide telephoto zoom lens aren't the greatest

EDIT: a good tripod is also handy.

Thanks for the tip on the filters.

I've read that, but have heard the 18-105 is a better starter. Doesn't matter now. I have what I have. I'm literally going off of what I've read on forums.

What would you suggest for my next purchase (lens wise)?

These were all taken during my tour in Okinawa, Japan. None are edited except for the sepia, black and white, and few cropped ones of the spider. I would go back there in a heartbeat, absolute paradise and surrounded by nature. Nikon D5100 with wide angle lens and polarizing filter. I took a couple thousand photos over there, waaaay too many to post. I've thought about uploading them to flickr or another photo site, but in order to really appreciate the content I would have to include descriptions = too much work. All of them are geotagged (exif) so I can always look back and see where they were. I can post more if there is any interest. I highly recommend Okinawa as a place to visit or even live. Amazing culture, food, scenery, and scuba diving!!!!

    ^^^Awesome Shots!!

ha! nice man! Jealous..i can't wait to finally purchase my DSLR. Im going Canon though and with a 60D with the 18-135mm lens. Hoping to get an adapter for some FD mount lens my dad has so i can use some cool old school glass.

really? i think filters are important for some shots. mainly out door stuff from what i have read..but there seems to be a big separation of people that use them and those that don't :notsure:

Why put a cheap piece of glass in front of your lens?

If you are using a ND filter that different...

    NDs looks sweet!

But why not a polarized?? I think Polarized can make a lot of images look nicer sometimes..

and UV..well..i get that..but depending on the situation might be nice to have some sort of protection..

They were cheap so I thought I would play with em and live and learn.

Nice pics dibble. I don't miss those Banana Spiders but Oki was fun overall. Too hot/humid for my liking.

A polarizing filter helps cut down reflections. It helps the sky/clouds pop too. Careful though because WA lenses will vignette and if you plan on using with WA lenses, get a slim version.

ND filters are important too. UV filters are sort of hit / miss. You don't really need it though some people want it to protect the front element of the lens-if you use a lens hood and cap all the time, you can leave the UV filter off.

What you want to be careful of is stacking filters. If you use a UV filter, try not to use it with other filters. If you need to use multiple ND filters, use the combination that requires the fewest number of filters.

Buy the best filter you can afford.

Filters can cause reflections or other distortion when you shoot into the sun or other bright light.

    Here's what Wikipedia says.

It's probably more accurate for the purpose of definition. That said, a 50mm is more "standard" for the 35mm world which makes the 35 "wide". There are ultra wide lenses too. That's where the focal length is shorter than the short side of the frame.

ha. I never knew there was a standard for what is wide and what itsn't. 35mm is nice, but not wide enough for me. I guess I prefer the ultra wide territory(although I haven't shot there in a bit)
