Yeah the 7D is a beast. Once you understand the 7D's AF the 5d3 will come to you a lot faster. Is almost the same functionality wise, just the 5d3 has a few more settings and AF points.

    http://blog.photoframd.com/2009/12/07/canon-7d-problem-focusing-customize-the-af/
This explains the different options and the joystick thing i was talking about.

Thats the only setting I know of that does that. I had no idea either until internets lol

    Soon....
Were you using an ND or polarizing filter for shooting in the middle of the day like that?

No filters, f/3.2 iso 125-160 shutter 1/1000 & 1/1250. I used to shoot wide open, but I've since stopped down one or two clicks depending on the sport

The original images had a blown out sky with a properly exposed subject. I upped the contrast, turned down the exposure (should have done this in camera), lightened up shadows, tweaked the curves, HSL palate to get to these images.

do you use the highlight warnings in Lightroom? with that you could just turn down the highlights, and not affect your overall contrast. I think your camera settings are fine(for a blown out sky), because all you had to do was turn down your highlights via the highlights and whites in the basic menu, and/or highlights and lights in the tone curve region.

in that case, I'd say screw the sky, and expose your subject correctly. the focus is on the players, amirite? all the uniforms are varying degrees of white . for me that would be a constant

It depends I guess. I do it freelance for the local paper. I'm not an employee so it's hard to say what a staffed photographer makes.

I had a website for the past 2 years and since it was local everyone knew me and I gave out a lot of business cards and tried to promote the site but I never really made anything off of it so I cancelled it. I know a couple really successful photographers that do sports and do really well with it, but I couldn't tell you how much they make, but I know that they are the most popular as I bought photos from them when I was still in school playing ball.

I'm sure if you had a couple local fields that hosted tourneys (USSSA or Legion ball or any sport for that matter) on the weekends that you could go and set up a booth and photo some of the games and have a computer or two set up and dump photos as you take them and have them on display so the parents could check them out you could probably do decent. I saw several photogs do that when I was playing a lot of tournament ball.

I personally make anywhere from 80-250 dollars a month on freelance from the paper, that's not counting what I sell on the side to the parents.. No it's not a killing, but it's extra side money that is very helpful.

gotcha.. i think the guys who make the money are totally dedicated and investing all their time into it... i don't think i could have the patience to commit...

as for the paper, i cant remember the last time i met someone who was on payroll... seems with the economy and digital photo, most of the shooters i have met were all freelancers...

The sun is really harsh down here, during the middle of the day. I hate the fact that USF uses white so predominately in their uniforms.

Yeah it takes a lot of commitment to make a living out of it I'm sure.

And yeah, most that I know are all freelancers as well.

Alright guys, Brie and I are going to the zoo this Friday and I would love to get some great shots. But I'm not sure what gear I should take in. My own personal preference says to take in the equipment in bold.

    My camera: 7D
    Brie's camera: 60D

    Lenses for both:
    Rokinon 8mm f/3.5
    Canon 17-40L f/4
    Sigma 30mm f/1.4
    Canon 50mm f/1.8
    Sigma 70-200 f/2.8
    Canon 55-250 f/3.5-5.6
    Sigma 100-300 f/4

The two bolded tele's are for sure going but I'm on the fence about whether to take in the fisheye as it is smaller and I could carry it easier, or the 17-40L. Which hell I may take both in cause she loves the fisheye and we'd both need something wide (I'm assuming I haven't been to the zoo in 10 years).

Any tips or suggestions before we go?

Id say takr one long lens, and your 30mm sigma. No need to bring all that to the zoo. Limit yourself to those two lenses and try to compose accordingly.

Yeah, I hadn't planned on bringing all of it. Just 2 tele's. One for me and one for her.

So you say the 30 over the 17-40?

I would say the tele for one body, and the wide angle(your choice, but I would rather have faster glass) for the other body. it could be a fun assignment for you and the gf. having two lenses that cover overlap in coverage would probably defeat the purpose of bringing two bodies. commit to one long, and one short, and you should "try" to make do or force yourself to use them to their advantage. that is just my humble opinion
