Just a 50mm, but I do have available to me a 70-200 to cover events for the paper I shoot for

Sounds like you know what you want to get, and what will benefit you the best.

    Personally I'm a fan of option 3 and 4.

I would definitely suggest an ultra wide, then. put that advantage of having a FF to use . 16-35mm f4. super sharp, and not as spendy as the 14-24mm.

although, a 70-200mm 2.8 would be nice for some portraiture. I say that because I already have the 16-35mm.

edit: or you can get a 35mm 1.8 if you don't mind the vignetting at f8 and higher. I think that would be a nice purchase for street photography on a ff since they are inexpensive (<$200 new)

I'm just trying to get a few more opinions
That's the possible plan I may take
My reasoning behind me wanting the 70-200 is it versatility.

That's my next purchase. I'm after the 100mm L. USM and IS.

    $900 later though...

I paid $162 for a manual focus macro lens. macro photography typically tends to require manual focus, unless you use the lens for general photography. I will use the lens for general photography, I just want to get closer and don't mind at all manually focusing.

of course, when I have money to burn, I ultimately want to get the zeiss 100mm f2. 10x the cost

It'll be a general lens too. Plus the f2.8 will be nice.

I just tried what you were planning on doing. F8, 1/8000s, flash at 1/4 power ISO100, and I got a severely underexposed and unusable shot (using 1/320s Auto Focal Plane).

I am curious what you come up with.

edit: might I add, to use hyper/high speed sync with the pocket wizards, one caveat is you have to have the strobes at full power, to reap the most out of the high speed sync since the strobes fire before the shutter opens. the burst length(of time) of a strobe is key here. without the pocketwizards, the peak power will not be utilized as the shutter will already be closed with that fast of a shutter speed.

I think it works because you have your speedlights really close to your subject(the salad dressing bottle). that distance in a different situation, is not ideal, typically.

here is a long, somewhat complicated read:

    http://www.scantips.com/speed2.html
    [IMG]

    another read:
    http://home.comcast.net/~NikonD70/G...Power_versus_Shutter_Speed_(D70_and_D200).htm
    [IMG]

so having your flash at full power, at speeds upwards to and beyond 1/3200s, you are really cutting your flash power down at least 5-6x, which in turn, you positioned your speedlight much closer to the salad bottle to compensate for more exposure.
    (I'll say this again)
-the pocketwizards(or whatever radio triggers that support high speed sync), trigger the flash at full power at a calculated time so the peak power is synced when the shutter is wide open(at its widest).

I would venture to say, your examples are not good ones, the flower, salad bottle, to fully get the most out of what you are trying to accomplish.

if you wanted to blow out the background, you can just crank up your flash power. otherwise, when you go to shutter speeds to the high heavens, you are just making your camera equipment(speedlights) work even harder and not achieve optimum results.

not sure this makes sense to you, but I still feel you are spinning your tires trying to do what you are doing
