sharpness is compromised when shooting in low light without a flash, generally

edit: for any portrait, the EYES are the main focal point, meaning the sharpest. errthang else is whatevs. them eyes are sharp enough. bokeh is good

    noted.

So how do they take the awesome night city shot? or something similar? Or is that generally just with a longer exposure and tripod?

if you are talking about a landscape shot at night, or a shot that will require at least 1/4s or more, then yes, a tripod is recommended

ISO 10000 300mm f/5.6 1/500 sec. Edited in LR4 and PS CS6 reduced noise in both and sharpened with High Pass filter.

Most do a longer exposure with a tripod. You can also use a faster lens and shorter time exposure. However most use a higher aperture to get more in focus and also star some street lights.

a good compromise with a faster shutter speed to freeze action, f5.6 for some sharpness(but probably closer to wide open for the focal length), and super HIGH iso for this shot

great shot btw. what camera body and lens?

Thanks! That was just a quick down and dirty edit to get it online. It could stand to be edited a little more.

    Nikon D7000 with 55-300 4.5-5.6

D7000 has great high ISO capabilities. Played with a Nikon 70-200 2.8 the other day. I'm trying to scrounge up the $1500 right quick to grab it before it's gone.

    Blackdawg,

Have you considered purchasing a prime lens? I purchased three zoom lens, fastest being at f/3.5, before I purchased my first prime lens. You have the Canon 60D so if you want a fast, cheap($$ wise) prime lens I suggest you checking out the Canon 50mm f/1.8. You can find used ones at craigslist for less than $100, I'm sure. That was my primary lens for a little over a year then I purchased the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 EX DC this spring so now this is my primary lens. Now you can't zoom in with prime lens but keep in mind that your camera has APS-C(1.6x crop sensor). I currently have the Canon Rebel XS but my next camera of upgrade will be to the 60D :) Only thing is I'm not sure if the 60D is a EF-S or EF only mount :/

can the d7000 really go to 10000 iso?

    cool that makes sense.

sweet! any tips on how to reduce noise?

I have. But im also in college and an audio student..that plus my tacoma build and now this..leaves little room for toys. I know i really want a wide angle lens as i love landscape shots and want to do some lighting and star night stuff. But i almost bought a 50mm canon prime before i had a body it was so cheap. haha

    60d i believe is ef-s. I am loving it!

my 60d goes to 12400 or something like that. 12800 maybe..

It has taken me almost a year to get this lens to do this. I'm more than ready to spend the money on a better lens.

    ISO 100 to 25600

exif data is still in the pic.

A lot of it is the camera you use. Some do better than others at high ISO's. I used the noise reduction sliders in LR and PS. I sharpened it making a new layer and used the high pass filter. Adjusted the clarity a little too.

I don't shoot a lot of high ISO stuff but I did notice my pics improved dramatically using LR and photoshop together. In fact that game pic was one of my first shooting really high. I'm not much of a sports photographer anyway. I just can't get into the sports photos. Plus that field had to be one of the worse lit ones I've ever seen. I would rather shoot animals, landscapes, or do studio stuff any day. Lol
