Thanks guys! Looked at a few today at Best Buy. Nikon, Sony and Samsung had a few Cameras I liked. I liked the Nikon and it seemed to have a lot of upgrades I could add as I progressed i(if they are even needed) I will look into the Cameras you have suggested too and see where it leads. The Budget is a a reference I guess. If I could get a lot better camera for a little more money than I would. I guess I'm just looking for the most bang for my buck.

Coming into this discussion late. What type of photography do you get into? Are you wanting to learn actual exposure controls? Are you open to interchangeable lenses or do you want the camera to have a built-in?

Anything really, action sports (skiing, mt biking) nature, urban... I take pics of everything/everywhere and just want better quality and be able to change effects and the way the pics are taken. I can see great shots I just suck at capturing them. I'm open to interchangeable lenses if it's worth it. I really don't know the first thing about exposure control or really anything about photography hahaha but I want to learn and be able to get some cool shots. A big thing too is I want it to be portable. Easy to carry in a small pack. That's the whole point is to have it on me at all times. I'm not and won't be a professional (at least for quite a while) haha so all my pics are for myself.

Thanks Jedi :) I surprised myself with that one. It's actually a black and white shot

Great contributions to this thread too! That first shot is nice

Your best option seems to be a smaller APS-C (crop sensor) DSLR. I say this solely because of your desire to shoot sports/action.

The problem you're going to run into is that they bodies aren't that small and fast lenses are even bigger.

If you want a small camera I would tell you to get a mirrorless BUT they don't do well with continuous Auto Focus just yet (compared to a DSLR) so I would recommend a used or refurbished entry level DSLR. Then build up the good lenses you want and buy a better body later on in life if the need arises to upgrade.

I started with a Nikon D5100 and it was great. The 3100/3200, and 5100/5200/5300 will all do plenty well for a beginner. I'd look into those models if you really like the Nikon. Canon has great cameras as well, but I prefer the Nikons as far as ergonomics goes.

For sports action on the Nikon side of the world, I recommend either the outgoing D7000 (now lower pricing) or its replacement, the D7100. I have the D7000 and it shoots like a machine gun.

As for image quality, a camera is only part of the battle. Quality lenses are even more important. You can get the lowest priced Canon or Nikon DSLR and really nice lenses and your images will turn out nicer that someone shooting 2 levels up DSLR with a cheapo lens.

For Nikon, I recommend the 16-85mm ED VR zoom. The ED coatings bring the red/green/blue into focus at the same focus point, thus giving sharper and contrasty images. Zoom range is ideal.
