I definitely see that interest. I've taken three classes now with avian physiology as major components in each and they've got some absolutely insane adaptations.
Do you know how they power the wing's upstroke?

Oh, woops, my bad, I meant upstroke, but just the whole muscle scene there for their wings is cool.
So you would expect the muscles powering the downstroke to be in the breast and the muscles powering the upstroke to be in the back, like it is for us, but that's not entirely the case.
To centralize and lower their center of mass for increased stability, they don't have large muscles on their back. They do have the large breast muscle underneath to pull the wing down, as you would expect. But then the muscle powering the upstroke is actually ALSO in the breast, underneath the large downstroke muscle. It does attach to the back of the wing with the tendon going through a canal formed between three different major bones and then down to the muscle, kind of like a pulley, I suppose. It's crazy!
The pectoralis major is the large, downstroke breast muscle and the supracoracoideus is the smaller upstroke muscle, inserting through the triosseal canal:

Also, their ribs are all linked together with a bone modification to be able to support the immense pressure of the muscles. The bones connecting to the flight muscles move a little, and the fercula (in the image above) acts a little like a spring, compressed during the downstroke and springing out to help with the upstroke. That spring motion also plays a small part in driving the respiratory system, bringing in air with each upstroke of the wings.
    They're so cool!

I was teaching my younger cousin about her camera and photography in general tonight at our family dinner. I handed her my camera and she took this (along with many other good ones) so I thought I'd share. Not bad for the first photos ever out of Auto mode ha

Haha, yeah I suppose I'm used to it after learning it so many times...They're so cool, though! And yeah, they have some crazy awesome aerial acrobatic abilities. Also just the fact that they can fly so high amazes me. Everest climbers have seen geese fly over the summit no problem...
I have a teleconverter and I actually don't use it very much for birds. The one that I have doesn't let me use auto focus (I don't know if that's just something that'll happen with every teleconverter or not), and manual focus is too time consuming for me with quick birds. I really love the 400mm lens for birds. Super fast and very easy, just a bit heavy to lug around with binoculars and a bird guide/field notebook. If I'm going birding to see birds, I usually just stick with binocs and my small P&S camera.

    Yup! Juvenile Turkey Vulture.
Yeah let me know if you guys want me to help you identify birds, or point you towards good ID resources. This is kinda my passion, if you couldn't tell, so sorry if I go off on this stuff!

Very nice photo, tell her awesome job! I still don't take portraits that are anywhere near that good.

Well since I have a good bit of money left over after Christmas, I think it's time for some lenses. What should I get? Except a 50mm 1.8 since I'll be ordering that one anyway.
