I just got the 7100 so I doubt I'll be upgrading to FX anytime soon. lol. But alrighty.

That was me. What Tony said about the variable aperture and with the 70-200 2.8 you have the large aperture throughout the entire zoom range. I had recommended the Tamron lens for that price. The Nikon one is $2399. My used Nikon 70-200 2.8 VR I was $1500. But these lenses will last you forever.

Yea what I figured. Since your editing them you KNOW the image. We see the total final result. So we don't know every fault. Happens to me all the time with music editing.

 

To answer your question about quality loss, a prime lens is usually sharper and higher quality because there are fewer glass elements. A zoom lens has a few more elements than a prime, for example the 70-300 f4-5.6 has 15 elements, so 15 pieces of glass to refract the image onto the sensor. Meanwhile a 50mm f/1.8 has 6 elements.

Now on top of that the higher quality lenses have YOU GUESSED IT, higher quality glass, which means less elements needed to zoom so a 70-200f/2.8 is way faster and far sharper than say... The $300 55-200mm f/3.5-5.6 lens.

And the 70-200mm f/2.8 comes in two versions for both canon and Nikon. Older models are usually around $1500 -Nikon VR, Canon IS

newer models... $2500-Nikon VR II, Canon IS II.

 

The key is to find the balance of editing and what you can get away with.

Which also means..get it as right as possible when you shoot it.

That's probably going to be my next lens. Except I'll get the DX-II that has the focus motor in it.

DX has no focus motor and your camera has to have one which your 7100 has. They are just louder and not as fast focusing to me using the cameras focus motor.

I see. As long as it has autofocus, that's fine with me. Speed and sound won't matter since I'll be shooting stars and landscapes with it. I'm sure they won't mind the sound and won't run away. lol

 

Grain in film could give the picture a special feeling to it. Same with digital.

 

Autofocus won't do you any good shooting stars anyway. Or anything dark for that matter.
