Aperture priority is great for wheeling cause you set your apetrue and let the camera worry about the shutter speed/light. Your outside so usually you have plenty of sun light and shutter speeds are usually 1/100th or so with f10. Iso is always at 100s for day light and around 400 for clouds and up to 800 for dusk.

I do manual mode for only for HDR/Night/Start stuff really..im no pro haha

For sport stuff or action things i do Shutter priority and set shutter at 1/320-1/1000th or whatever works depending on the sport/activity and other stuff.

I only use manual when I have to adjust all variable, when I want a certain aperture I use AP, when I want to stick to a certain shutter speed I use SP.

As for the lenses you wanted, def the 50mm f/1.8 "nifty fifty" best $120 you'll ever spend on a piece of gear. Macro is expensive, I just use the 50 reverse mounted. Fisheye gets boring, I had the rokinon and only took about 25 shots with it. I like rectilinear wide angles better, such as the tokina 11-16 that medic mentioned, that thing rules. Also the sigma 10mm is nice. For a starter telephoto get a sigma 70-300, cheap and it has a macro switch for close ups.

Definitely an art form, and so rewarding when you capture a great shot. I will definitely develop my own style as I improve. Thanks for the tips guys definitely have some stuff to think about next time I go shoot.

Cool I will pick a 50mm soon and probably a telephoto as funds become available.

Thanks for the tips & definitely tend to over do it. Then I start over and come back with smaller adjustments.

I'm thinking about trading in my 55-300 on a Tokina 11-16 2.8. The only thing that's sucks about a crop sensor is having to buy DX lenses for your wide angles.

I was messing around tonight taking pics getting ready to list our house. I was playing around with the editing tools and came up with the second image which is the actual colors. My question is, do you always have to edit pics or should I have changed my settings when taking the picture? The first is very redish orangy yellowy.. haha I know less on the subject of editing than anything else in photography so just curious if I should spend some time reading and learning about that to achieve a desired shot.

It looks like your white balance was set for a different lighting than the light in the room. That's a pretty simple shooting settings change, really.
Sometimes I'll try clicking the auto lighting adjustment tool in LR and it puts it to a way that looks worse than the original photo, so I just change it back. It really all depends on what you think looks good. I personally like your edited photo over the original, it's a little more natural and easy to look at. Plus, if you're taking these pictures to list the house, you'll want to capture the actual colors....

yea like it came out to..idk..11 euros or something..when you put in an amount it should tell you the US dollar equivalent at some point in the process. I just fiddled with it till it was close to 10 US dollars.

but yea no problems at all.

PayPal automatically does the conversion for you so don't worry about it, just make sure they only take your donated amount.

Thanks guys, testing the plugin now :)

New question: What do you guys have your metering set at? I know how spot metering works and is different from the other options, but the other three options (partial, evaluative, center-weighted) produce pretty much the same pictures to me. Any tips here?

I use spot metering almost all the time. I want my metering on my subject.

Depends for me. I'll use even metering of the whole scene, center weighted, or spot. Lately when shooting in a high contrast lighting environment I've been experimenting with center weighted for a more chiaroscuro/contrasty effect. I'll meter my subject in the shadows and the light coming in the window gets blown out a bit or vice versa meter on a well lit subject and the shadows around get darker.

Landscapes/cityscapes/etc I usually meter the whole scene.

The trouble that I've found with spot metering is that your subject then MUST be in the center of the photo. Is there any work around for that other than cropping the picture afterwards?
