If your camera has Auto-Exposure (AE) lock, you can hold that button after metering to lock the exposure and recompose. Otherwise you can switch to manual and dial in the exposure from the spot metering.

Ooooh, I'll have to look into that. Probably won't work for quick-moving birds, but usually I use center-weighted metering for birds. I don't know, I'll have to play around with it some more.

That little slider? That's exposure compensation and the camera will adjust the exposure settings to match what you've selected. Once the camera has determined the exposure settings (shutter speed/aperture/ISO), you can lock it down by holding the AE lock button, then when you press the shutter release the camera uses the locked exposure setting instead of metering again with the new scene.

Can you not set your camera to meter the same as focusing? By that I mean meter and focus at half press and then recompose and release the shutter with a full press.

That works for me with focusing only. Yeah I've tried that a few times with metering. Of course, maybe I did it wrong or something, so I'll give it another shot, but I'm pretty sure that doesn't work for me. I do it all the time with the focus, though.

Nikon's 3D matrix metering will use active focus point for metering. If the focus point is in the shadows it will lighten the scene on a landscape if in the sunny part it will darken the scene.

From an article on Digital Camera World:

The spot metering region is linked to the autofocus area on most Nikons, so make sure you’ve selected the single-area AF mode. Now select the AF area using the four-way selector on the back of the camera. It should match the area of the subject you want to be in focus.

Thanks, I thought the matrix metering took from several points and averaged it or something along those lines. Now I know.

Question then. If I leave it on single, center AF point for auto focusing, half press, than recompose and shoot. Did it still meter from that center point when it was focusing on my subject, or is it going to start metering the background when I recompose? I haven't had an issue yet so I assumed it was metering and focusing on the half press and then I was good to recompose.

I believe if you recompose while pressing the shutter button halfway down, the metering and wb wont change until you release the shutter button

I believe this is true too. I haven't had a problem with mine changing. If you do you can always use the AE lock button on the back of the camera.

Just tested it out. Focusing is liked at half press but metering seems to change after I recompose. I'll play with it more between homework.

I use the AE-L/AF-L button but it gets old using it a majority of the time ha not lazy just saying it would be convenient to be able to have that be the default at half press.

Some people set the AE-L/AF-L button to the AF-ON mode. That seems like it would be a pain in the ass too. That's where the camera will only focus when AF-ON button is pressed and a half press of the shutter button just turns on the metering. I never really got the point of that. I know the flagship cameras have that but why?

I've read of people shooting that way as well but I see no reason to unless you're not trusting your cameras AF or something ha I'm sure there is a perfectly rational and good reason for it. I just don't know what it is.
