You could go from f/8 to f/22 and get a nicer star or open up to f/4 ish to help get rid of it.

The real shame isn't the tail but the headlight. Meaning lower exposure.

Otherwise, this is a great start.

The flare looks good, but the headlights are a tad overexposed and the weird glare on the quarter panel above the rear wheel. It's not a bad picture at all though!

i actually kinda like the affect the tail light gives, but it also gives a little lens flare where derek was saying the glare was

Hmm. I like these (Jake's skate stuff). I like that it's in a different environment. I like that you're trying out flash too.

If I could offer a bit of advice, it would be to make your exposure for ambient light then use your flash to fill in. So if you want emphasis on the skater, make your exposure for a stop lower than ambient light then add enough with the flash to light the subject. Easiest to do this running the camera and flash in manual mode.

You also want to try and keep the flash power down so you have decent recycle time.

The whole flash thing is easy peasy. Well, it takes practice.

The first thing you can do is set the flash to fire as the shutter is closing. Also called rear curtain sync. This will help you a lot and it can give you some really cool effects too.

You're definitely on the right track though
