I can tell you if you shoot raw, you can fix a lot later. But if you shoot jpeg and get it right, you'll have a lot less work to do later. It's a religious war and those aren't winnable since both sides have valid arguments.

For many things, you can do the same result with a P&S. I have a g10 and an s90. Both of them are as good or better than a lot of dSLR's in some circumstances. But if you need high ISO, a high frame rate or interchangeable lenses, it ain't gonna work for you.

IDK. I think he brings up a lot of good points. Is he perfect? No. But neither is anyone else.

I do think you have a very valid point about getting started. You need to stick with a "teacher" until you get it down. Then, start experimenting.

Hey guys so iv got a question and I'm sure you all can help.

So I'm interested in getting a fish eye lens I have been shopping around town and they are ridiculously expensive (which is what i expected) so is there any cheap way to get the fish eye effect or a place to find a lens for a decent price I'm not sure where to look online.

Also the guy at the camera shop offered me an adapter but I wasn't impressed at all it was kinda pointless imo, is there anything like that but maybe of better quality? I forget what brand he showed me

O ya last thing I have a canon rebel xs, thanks for any input guys :D

Do you want true fish or just a nice wide angle like a 14mm?

If you want an inexpensive fish, try looking for one of the Pengleng fisheyes.

AND it has autofocus! lots of the other brands only manual focus.

Or if you want a cheap "get the job done" type of fish eye check this out
    http://opteka.com/opt65.aspx

but the tokina one is WAY better

Id love a true one but I could make a wide angle work I'm just not sure if I can get the effect I want with a wide angle if that makes since?

But I'll check the pengleng too thanks!

Haha ya I was just reading about it sounds pretty damn impressive, and I can't do manual cuz they always come out blurry cuz I can't shoot wearing glasses and I'm retarded and can't put contacts in bahaha, most of my film b&w's are a little blurry for that reason haha

A nice WA lens, one that maintains perspective, is expensive :) But a fish isn't so bad--plus, a fish is way more fun to play with.

haha my thoughts exactly but I have a rule with myself I won't spend much more on a lens then I spent on the camera our else I would go insane and have like $10,000 lenses laying around that I took a loan out to buy like a dumbass haha

Iv tried idk what my problem is its really just a hit or miss I always have to try and do my best to get the focus right when developing them haha (although I haven't shot b&w film in a long time)

Nah. You'll have glass way longer than any body you'll own.

Could be the adjustment isn't enough to cover your prescription. A focusing screen (like split screen) would be a good bet. None available for the Rebel afaik.

Well im 1/3 away (money wise) from purchasing my next len.

    Nikon 80-200mm f2.8 Af-D
    http://www.nikonusa.com/Nikon-Produ...1986/AF-Zoom-NIKKOR-80-200mm-f%2F2.8D-ED.html

Cheaper than it's older brother, BUT with no Af-S, VR, removable lens collar, no hood (that comes with it), no nano coating, and i have heard it isnt weather sealed at the MOUNT, BUT i think it is, after playing with it.

I'm doing this one over the 70-200 VR because i dont need VR first of all. It's almost identical as far as IQ and optical quality. They have been making this lens (new) since 1999, so there is obviously a reason why they havent stopped production. Its basically a 70-200 without the bells and whistles. And every reviewer raves about this lens. i havent heard one bad review yet. and everyone i talk to that has it, absolutely LOVES it. SO ive made my decision. Hopefully by early june i will own it!

Jake, and anyone else that would like to chime in, when you decide on a lens, do you set specific money aside for that lens, or for photography in general. See thats what I will do when I get a job, set money aside for certain things, I mean I guess the smartest thing to do. Is that how you all look at it?

It's an expensive hobby--that's for sure. I just bought a KAP rig...probably one of the cheaper things I've bought recently.

I like to set aside money for stuff. Budgeting is great because it helps keep spending under control and give you an idea where you are financially.

I do have one rule for stuff like this and that is it's all paid for--no loan, no longer term credit card debt.
