There's an even easier way to do that. Make two exposures. One for the sky and one for the foreground. Then, using Photoshop, blend the two images by making a layer mask and "painting away" the parts you want to expose on the image below.

If the image is more complex (ie; greater dynamic range); you can make a third exposure.

I say it's easier because it does not require the use of a black card. and allows you to blend in areas the card may not have caught and because you don't need to figure out what the break point needs to be in the image.

So, I'm on a little mission to build a KAP rig. This is a RC controlled camera platform you fly from a kite. My plan is to take more landscape oriented shots from 200' up. Oceanscapes and some landscapes.

I'm using a rig from brooxes.com and a Canon S90. The rig has pan, tilt and shutter controls. The alternative is an automatic shutter kit that basically starts firing the shutter once you turn it on--spray and pray mode.

If this works out, I may build a larger rig and fly my IR converted Rebel on it. Or convert a P&S and fly that from the existing rig.

I'm almost done with it. I need a receiver battery and just ordered that today--the local hobby shops don't have them in stock (lame).

There are a bunch of resources on the web for Kite Arial Photography that I've used. The two I've been looking at the most are brooxes.com and www.arch.ced.berkeley.edu/kap/kaptoc.html.

I should be flying and taking pictures here as soon as the receiver battery shows up :)

You could use this one. Just flip it over so it's more gimbal like.

how much does this all weigh? im just trying to figure out how big of a kite you need haha or just how windy you need it to be to carry the weight.

also your not worried about the failed crash attempts at getting the kite in the air?

or m i missing something?? please tell haha :D
