Not that far up north, but similar terrain. This is basically all Mammoth area. The lake (my first pic) is Dorthy Lake, the hike started at Convict Lake. Some of the other photos were taken on our way to Duck lake. Both lakes are just over 10 thousand feet.

Yeah. I have a ton of experience with them and my advice is to have someone else do it. You will spend a lot on supplies for not a lot of return unless you use it regularly. Most ink-jets are expensive to run. Plus, you'll get color correction and a variety of different medium to print on if you have someone else print for you-I'd almost guarantee it'll be cheaper if you are a low volume printer.

If you're not deterred, then one of the Epson printers that will accept roll paper. Overall, I think they are better than the Canon (which is still a very good printer).

We did actually, mother and her young. Momma was at full attention giving us the evil eye waiting for us to continue on our way vs. taking off in the opposite direction. I wasn't able to bust out the Nikon :(

Here's a pic of Duck lake. Started the hike wearing shorts and a t-shirt, about 3.5 hours later and at approximately 10,300 ft we took this shot just before the snow started coming down.

    Last photo I promise!

I call this Good Luck Chalk Hill. The hill is all chalk, we were out off-roading and found it. Wife dared me to climb it (on foot) and so I did. Almost made it to the top, but it was a bit too slippery. Bitched about it on my way down with shoes now full of chalk. Hate when the wife dares me because I tend to accept the challenge. Got back to my truck ditching the wife and next thing I know she's yelling for me. Wants me to meet her on her way back. When we meet she shows me a leather wallet she found. We end up going through it and there's $136 in it. The wallet was burned and is in very bad condition, but still mostly intact. The cash inside was wet, but was well protected and survived.

Long story short and based on what else survived in it (licence, Credit cards.....), the guy who owns it lost it sometime between 2005-2007. The wallet had seen snow, rain, and even a fire, yet somehow survived over the years. Tried to locate the owner and had all intentions to give him his wallet and money back (meeting him and hearing how he lost it and how we found it was more important to us than a few bucks) , but we were never able too. The wallet and the cash now reside in our safe in a zip lock bag.

Anyhow here's Good Luck Chalk Hill, well bad luck for him :p

I have been meaning to build a smugmug myself. I think it's a good way to get your foot in the door. As far as generating money, it all depends on the quality or your work and being able to drum up business. I know a few people that present and sell their photos from a Smugmug. They also use it as a blog too. I would build a dedicated Facebook page to go along with your site.

I've done that, i'm now looking for somewhere to host the photos and I like that smugmug has unlimited storage and has all the purchasing side of it wrapped up. I looked at zenfolio but they were more expensive and it sounds like smugmus is a little easier to build on. I think on smugmug I need to get the portfolio level so that's like $12.50/month, not oo bad I guess.

    I do. But I don't sell.

I've been a customer for over 10 years. Pretty happy most of the time...and when I'm not, their help desk peeps can help me out pretty quick.

I happen to like a lot of what they do. It's easy to get things setup and to setup price lists, etc. There's a lot of flexibility both on the design side and the commerce side. But rather than blow smoke, I'll tell you that any of the various options are available to you for a trial run. Give it a twirl. Custom domains, flexible price lists, variety of templates (even the use of customization services), ....

Some of their competitors, Zenfolio, have based their own offernings on what SmugMug does-I've tried Zenfolio out and it's not bad. I still prefer SmugMug.

Well, everyone that works with the toads will be using a few of my pictures. I won't be paid but will be given photo credit. Most of them will be put on power points for presentations but I might make the USFW website as well.

Next field season I might ask for camera equipment and document the summer surveys/field work. I think I am also going to be including photography on my résumé from now on. There seems to be a big demand for photos but most people in the science field only know how to take a basic picture of a specimen for future identification .

Anyone else having Flickr issues? I tried to upload something the other night and it kept giving me an error. I thought it was just chunking out, but I am trying again tonight and it still won't let me upload.
Well I just tried again, and it worked. I guess I just had to bellyache about it.
If you follow the challenge thread you've seen this, or something close. I have been working with the edit over the last week. Nothing big, but little tweaks here and there. I like this one much better.

I purchased the Pentax 1.4x tele-converter when it first came out about a year ago and it has stayed attached to my 300mm f/4 lens pretty ever since. Yesterday I spotted a yearling bedded across the ravine from my deck and got a shot of her using the tc (lens becomes a 420mm f/5.6). Focusing through that mess of branches was not easy.

Couple of hours later went back out and mom had come along and bedded next to her. It was starting to rain and getting darker out, couldn't get the ISO below 3200 so I removed the tc. Lowered the shutter speed and used the top of the grill to help steady it. What surprised me is how much more DOF I got by removing the tc. You can not only see all of mom but the younger deer to the right of her.

With the tc I can better focus on birds and other objects further away. With winter coming and a lot less light think I might try it without the tc again for awhile though. Does anyone else use a tele-converter, thoughts?
