I'll third the recommendations to take it slow while building up your mileage. If you've already done 10 miles in a week then you're more than ready for a 5k. Try not to increase your mileage by more than 10-15% each week.

On another note, I'm running the Houston Marathon on Sunday. The forecast is crummy though. Low of 42, high of 50, and a 70% chance of heavy rain. Oh, let's not forget the 15mph winds. Yikes, this is going to suck. :)

I ran a half marathon (2011 Route 66) in similar conditions( high of 39, low of 32 and raining!), and me been a FL native, it sucked monkey balls!

    Good luck!

OK snowshoe running is hard, very hard -especially w/ non-packed snow. Was "running" in about 6-8" of virgin snow and it was a tough, slow go- 4.5 miles in 75 minutes

I'm going out for a longer loop and part of the route I ran yesterday will be repeated today, my hope is that those sections are a little easier (fingers crossed)

Ran Hartford marathon twice…bunch of half marathons and last summer ran my first tough mudder in VT (hardest on body)…marathon is mostly mental in my opinion.

Running in snow shoes? That's some serious training!

I completed my second Houston marathon last Sunday. It rained on us at mile 1 and 8. It was 48 degrees and the wind was blowing 15 with 24mph gusts. It was a hell of a race, but I finished. Now to train for the next one.

Nice! I've done Tough Mudders and a couple of halfs, primarily in preparation for the mudders. The VT one was on a ski resort, right? How'd those hills treat you?

This week I started a 16 week training program for my first full marathon. Fitting in the hours to run is going to be a challenge as the mileage ramps up, but while I can fake my way through a half, I know a full without the proper preparation will kill me.

It's going to be a long 4 months but I'm really excited to see how my body handles it. I haven't done a structured 4 month program since high school.

I need to get on some sort of training regimen rather than just getting out and "running a few miles". I did get netflix on my phone so im not bored to death running on the tredmill...haha

I find having regime helps me keep on track and better motivated, I do try and keep it very flexible though- so for example if the weather looks crappy on my long run day I just swap it in on a better day

most of the plans/regimes I've seen are geared to a specific event and usually have a lot in common (slow build up, a long run, some hill/tempo/speed work thrown in, recovery weeks and a taper at the end)- would be interested to see some plans that were more maintenance orientated for those lulls in the off season or stretches between events

Yea I dont really have an event I want to train for. Like you said I would be interested in a "maintenance" plan.

My maintenance plan is the 25/30/35/40 plan. On week one I aim for 25 miles, while increasing 5 miles every week. After the 40 mile week, I just go back to 25 and start again.

    Works for me!

^ sounds like a plan :) After my Uwharrie race, I'm going to give some careful thought to how much and what kind of running I'll do until I get closer to another event. I'll probably cut back to four days (running five now) and cut mileage back to around 25-30- something like three 6-ish mile runs w/ a 12-ish mile long run on the weekend.

    That sounds good.
Dude, if your immune systmem is compromised, and your congestion is all over, I suggest you take a break and possibly not run the race.

I think you'll find a lot of folks who subscribe to thought that if the cold is above the neck- it's probably OK to run, if it's below the neck (in the lungs) not such a good idea

I have run several times w/ a mild cold and often it feels better- gets rid of some of the congestion, but if it's in the lungs it's time to sit it out

you've got over a week, so probably best to get over the cold vs making it worse- listen to what your body says- it usually knows best :)

Ive got a 6 mile run tomorrow and two more 3 mile runs next week and that will end my training.
I just cant miss the race. Three months of training, shit. I do feel better I also am not really congested, its more head and nose crap.

I m gonna try the run tomorrow and see how i feel. I may just do some stretching and crunches, push ups stuff like that and not do the last runs in my training.

My four other friends that WERE going to run this race with me have backed out! There is know way Im not running:)

I ran 30.7 miles last week. Slowly getting where I wan to be. I'm must proud of a trail run we did on Sunday. It had a 900 ft ascent, base was a bit over 5000 ft of elevation. It was 5.7 miles and it took 1:05:58. It was the hardest run I'd done in a VERY LONG TIME!!!

Look forward to add that spot for my weekly schedule! :D

    nice! :D

I think the most elevation we have in town is about 30ft max change...haha

I'm gonna set my goal at trying to get up to running 25 miles a week. Once spring gets here some of it will be replaced with mtn biking though
