    i agree!

well, i would normally agree with you, but i tried something a little new this morning.

instead of running at 8:30 or even 9:30 per mile i slowed all the way down to 11:00/mile and had the absolute easiest 8 miles of my life -not to mention it was just plain fun. my HR was hovering around 130...

im going to keep experimenting, but i think if i keep my HR down, i should be able to complete a 50 feeling ok on that dreaded second half.

Out of curiosity, what are the running communities like where you live? I am lucky to have a massive running/triathlon community to be part of and a pretty runner friendly city as well. Sure makes running that much better. I belong to a few different clubs including one called the Flying Irish, which is a social running club with all levels of runners. We have actually had more than 600 people show up for our regularly scheduled run, pretty amazing seeing so many running through downtown along our various paths.

^ I am a member of the Empire Runners Club in Santa Rosa. They often have many races a year. I dont really hang out with any of them but the events are fun and well supported.

@ Transplant, have you ever heard of Dr. Phil Maffetone? Google Maffetone test. It is heart rate based. I did this and I was really surprised. Three months of running really slow sucked ass. That was the hardest part, but well worth it.

Yes, we have a very large showing at most races in the area, and some further away as well. The Flying Irish is out of Spokane, as are a few others I belong too.

    This years group photo.

I know some have raced in OR, actually just this past weekend I know some ran the A Very Poplar Run in Hermiston. We only run "official" runs through Thanksgiving. Thursdays are our regular running day. I also run with another club that meets quite a bit more frequently, and all year around regardless of weather. Manito running club, it's an affiliate of the Bloomsday Road Runners Club. We run, every Saturday morning, most Sunday mornings, and lots of impromptu weird times with our "night shift" which has been known to run at all times, and days of the week.

    VERY interesting!

im 30, and i havent been consistent in my training over the last 2 years. so.. i would be at 135-145, which... oddly enough.. is just below my race pace (155-160) id be more than happy to give this a try.. im glad i started looking into my heart rate more, it really seems to be the key to progressing at a "safe" rate.

now.. does that mean no intervals or tempo runs completely? just keep running until my body gets more efficient and gets to its "natural pace"?

for all those interested, this is what i read http://philmaffetone.com/180-formula

TL;DR just skip to the bottom where it explains the formula.

Im totally sold on it. My PT Dr. told me about it when I was having some Knee problems.
Yes, NO speed work for the 3 or 4 months of training. Today I ran 26.5 in 3:43:39 at avg. HR of 140. Thats 3 min. faster than my fastest marathon. It was not even a hard run. My race pace HR is up around 170. Im 48.

sold! ill be going for my first garmin run in about 6.5 hours, and sticking to 135-145 and just rolling out the distance.

thats the goal isnt it? hit that heart rate and run until you dont have the juice to keep going?

very interested. my next race is a half in LA on Jan3.

now, im kind of a rookie to all this science of running stuff.. and i smoked for 16 years -quitting two years ago..

but if my max is supposed to be 185... and i can readily hit and hold 170 but its not really fun...

how the HELL are you racing at 170 being 18 years older than i am??

Everyones heart rate is different, you cant compare it to other peoples. If you look at my Strava site go to my training log and look at my last race. Annadel 7 mile loop, Avg HR was 173. That was a hard race. I had been running a lot before it too.

@ Transplant, yes on the HR what ever you have figured it to be you should shoot to run at that HR. Including up hill and running faster down hill. I stayed flat for the first two months during the training and slowly added hills. Cause really at first I had to walk up most of the steep stuff to stay at the low HR.

its great! im learning more and its motivating me to run more and farther. im only two runs in and slowly letting the battery drain to its shutoff point. a week in with two runs and lots of playing im still at 70% consider me extremely satisfied at this point. garmin connect REALLY digs into the data too. at first i was a little concerned with my vertical oscillation and cadence and what not.. but ill learn about that and fine tune my form later when my fitness is up to speed.
http://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/627559875 i dont know if any of you have seen this before, but the cadence and vertical oscillation plots are interesting to say the least. i want to say i can see when im going too slow... when ive found a natural pace im not forcing... and when im pushing too hard. i suppose a lot of this is up to individual physiology but its fascenating nonetheless and ill be glad to be able to watch trends over the next few months. because of all this information, i have great confidence i could average 10:00 miles for a 50 in January... but its week two back into it... i think ill wait to register ;)

true. i have a bit of a pre-existing heart condition.. that has yet to occur while running thankfully. im usually sitting down having been sedentary for a while. BUT, my body seems to respond VERY quickly to running. two weeks ago my 125-130bpm pace was 11:00 and this morning it was just under 10:00. i cant compare anything to anything at this point... being patient hasnt been my forte, but im convinced not to start actually measuring until my first stateside race Jan3. by then i should have a good handle on my body.

i feel like i can run forever at 130-135... and i like that. i want to feel like that in a race. im convinced to the point that with the exception of finishing out heels blazing just for fun Ill be hanging out below 140 until its time to race. its VERY flat here and VERY not where i live in the states, so... ill take advantage of the easy start while i can. the advantage i do have... is both living and working at altitude. im at nearly 5000ft here.. and my house is at about 5000ft at home. consequently i LOVE racing at sea level.
