well i finally just got back from the meet! i only ran a DMR (Distance Medley Relay) and a 4x4

In the DMR which in order goes a 1200/400/800/1600 i ran the 400.
My time ended up being a 51.8 which is about the same as last week.

My last race was the 4x4. I stated (first leg) and my time was a low 52 :( im still trying to get my open time (or first leg times) under 52!!!!!!

What doesnt help is that i was pretty sick all week and didnt do much training. The meet was SUPER DRY. like just all the air and including the track was super hot. Next week i run at Cerritos College and the have a "mondo" track which is supposed to be the fastest surface in the world so we'll see how that goes.

I had a bathroom emergency on my 7 miler today, so I will run it again at around 5:30.

Trail running with a MEGA BABE tomorrow, over a Turkey Mountain (trail). I hope I don't F up...

I know this a medical related question; however I was hoping (not really) someone in here may have experienced these symptoms in the past. After running about 1 mile steady pace, I start to experience intense pain in my shine/calves to the point where it starts to become a numbing pain basically below the knee and above the ankle. I thought shine splints and have tried extended rest periods between running, I've tried new shoes (breaking them in prior to running). I'd like to run more frequently without taking 2x 800mg of Air Force standard issue Motrin. I'm extremely sore right after running to the point I have to hobble to my truck and the soressness last about 3 days. Thanks guys.

^ How long of an extended period w/o running? A couple of days won't cut it. The one time that I developed shin splints, it was due to running Sub 7 min miles on old worn out shoes. It took almost three months before it heeled.

Also, what type of surface are you trying to run? I try to run on grass as much as I can (tricky if you are not used to it, as you could easily rolled your ankles) , and when I go home( Tampa) I run barefoot on the beach.

Asphalt is OK as it has give. Concrete has ZERO give, so I avoided like the plague.

Do you have a rubberized track near you?

I suggest that you go to a running store near you and tell them about your problem. Try several, here in T Town there is a good one, an ok one and several bad ones. But try them all and inform yourself. Try to join a running group if you can, generally speaking you'll never meet friendlier people and they can point you in the right direction. Sorry I can't be of more help, as I've only had this problem once, and it was almost 13 years ago...

It was through parts of the Wekiva State Park. It was a great run, and a beautiful day. I have another this weekend, this time on pavement.

    LOVE trail running!

I did 4.7 miler @ Turkey Mountain today with Taylor, a BEAUTIFUL brunette with green eyes 5-3 and only 23... ;)

It was EASY, even with the cyst. I can still feel it, but it's not hurting while running, so that is good!

    Walking barefoot OTOH...

Today I was aiming for 5 miles 11 min splits, but Cat (short for Catherine) had something else in mind.

6 miler in 1:01:00 which is good for 10:10 splits. I'm worn and the cyst is on fire!

Taylor didn't show up today, didn't see that coming. She said that she did trail running for 1/2 hour earlier today. Disappointed is to small a word...

Gosh I want to get back into running, just read all 10 pages.. Its so hard to get motivated though, but this thread is helping.. I just got to do it! Tomorrow, I start tomorrow! I lift twice a week and train mixed martial arts (mainly grappling) twice a week. So i'm active and in great shape for grappling, but running distances kill me.

    STOP!

    Before you start running:

    1. Go to a running store and buy new shoes. Let them figure your running pattern! NEVER run on old shoes, even if they look "ok"!

    2. Map out what you want to accomplish; speed, distance or both!

    3. Start slow and short and go from there! Heck, I started with buying a running book, but there should be butloads of info on the internet. Read!

Let us know how we can help!

    And welcome to the fold!

Pulling 8 minute miles now I guess I wasn't to far out of the swing of things. I'm still trying to get to my 7 minute mile that I ended senior year with so it shouldn't be to hard.

the 15K that I'm running on Sat, I'm gunning for 8:30-8:45 splits. The 5+3K on Sunday (don't ask, sponsored by 53rd Bank) I will run considerably slower... ;)

Also on Sunday, I'll do my BEAUTIFUL barefoot 6 miler over @ Clearwater Beach. No way in HADES I'm going to Tampa, and I'll skip a barefoot run at the beach! :headbang: :plane: :burnrubber:

My Spring Break is this week I love going barefoot on the beach plus it's that much harder to run on soft sand than hard dirt or asphalt. The picture got deleted by my Aunt whom was at the beach last year and I didn't know she was there took a picture of me with my backpack tackle box and fishing rod I was doing a 2 mile run to a marsh inlet where the flounder and reds will bite all day if you get there at the right time.

I'm addicted to running at the beach, barefoot while there is a thunderstorm going on!

I did it one time that I was truly depressed, and only sex with a beautiful woman gives me a greater high!

BTW, I ALWAYS get funky with chicks that I can leave the light one, if ya know what I mean... ;)

I used to be decently big into running. I ran 4 miles a day 5 days a week! Never ran any competetive events though, and I honestly don't plan to. I just want to run for the enjoyment and for being in better shape.

Let me tell you, comparing grappling and long distance running is like comparing a pillow and a rock.

I lift sport specific and train sport specific, including sprints and sled pulls. I know LSD isnt sport specific for me. I know the whole Type 1 muscle fibers and Type 2A and 2B fibers, fast twitch, slow twitch stuff. But I figure if my fast twitch are good because of grappling then if my slow twitch are also good because of LSD, then it cant hurt anything?

So you have a running foundation, good. 20 miles a week for a runner is on the low-mid scale; but is a boatload compared to a none- runner. I personally don't know what "twitch" or "LSD" is but feel free to expand...

LSD is a workout term for long slow distance (long distance running) The opposite is HIIT for high intensity interval training (doing 60 second circuits for 3 sets)

Not sure how I missed this thread...

I was never much of a runner. Did a lot of running years and years ago as an ocean lifeguard but not much since. I'd always get nasty shin splints and stuff.

Last year I signed up for the Tough Mudder and signed up for some running events as motivation to get in shape. After a 2 miler and a couple of 5ks the shin splints were back. Then it clicked -- I never had issues running barefoot on the beach.

Switched to Merrell Trail Gloves, changed up my form, build up the strength, and managed to run a half marathon on pavement in the things. I never really enjoyed running until using minimalist shoes. Now I do love it.

Just ran the Long Branch 4 Mile Beach Run this past Sunday and did better than I expected considering my recent lack of training. Got a half marathon coming up in a couple months along with 2 Mudders this year.

Glad this thread's around! Looking forward to hearing everyone's stories!

Oh txs for the explanation! I train with people that run marathons with 6 mins splits. Me personally, I'm chasing 8 mins splits for 1/2's as I have no inclination of running a marathon, but yeah I would not call 6 or 8 mins slow...
