this is another thing.. I have the stock bed caps on my 2nd gen. do I really need to upgrade to the metal ones? Dont the metal ones make the camper sit lower by a tad vs the stock plastic caps? I want to cut the least amount off my Prinsu rack as I can.

I've seen a couple GFC's lately. Both were missing the canopy rear door.

It's been covered a bunch, but essentially SP has recommended keeping the stock bed rails.

You don't NEED them, but it seems like lots of people are having sealing problems at the front of the bed without them. Also, the plastic ones have been proven to have the clips break and they start wiggling out from between the bed sides and any camper (GFC, Vagabond, etc) that mounts like the SP where there is weight on the plastic caps. Then you have bigger problems.

@Coop68 is driving back from picking his up, but I think it looks great with the smaller gap above the cab. It seems like SP figured out a solution with 1/8" (or 3/16") aluminum metal bed rail caps.

That's what a lot of us Vagabond users do - have a bed platform extension so we can pull the mattress back away from the hinge end so our toes don't hit the ceiling. I have a 10" extension myself and the same Exped mattress spec'd by SP.

I will be curious how my caps hold up long term, but I think the flange that registers the camper to the bed (I don't think Vagabond or GFC have this) will help to reduce the wiggle that causes the issues. Deformation could still be an issue, but the other reality is given the number of GFCs in the world you don't really hear that much noise about bed caps being a problem.

I'd also be curious to know how the spacers attach. The more you add spacers, etc, the more opportunity for movement if it's not basically part of the same frame structure.

Ultimately, I think you have to trust the manufacturer and designer of the product and their primary recommendation and leverage their support if issues arise.

I'd LIKE to mount solar there.. to keep it tied to the truck, and not the camper. but :notsure: but I do also like the front fairing and aesthetics. :D

    good to know.

Interesting. I'll reach out when that time comes and see what they suggest.

yeah I was thinking about that as I was driving. Using it as a fairing would be real nice. But the part that’s not used under the overhang, idk lol

If it was me, I wouldn't cut the Prinsu. I'd sell the Prinsu, and buy an Animas rack from Sherpa.

Still having trouble with the price tag though, and would love doublecheck their "B" length to confirm it's not too close to the camper.

It's served well the last 5+ years. I don't have a problem cutting it up and making it clean.

I plan on selling my full rack and trying to figure out which one of theirs fits the best. I'll probably call them whenever I get my camper to see what will fit. Maybe be their test subject

You either need to hack it short or you need to cut it down i think i did 1/2 or 3/4"". You don't need metal which you would need another spare or mod if you go that route. It would sit too low with the metal ones. I cut mine. I need to modify it a bit but i have about 1.25" free space now.

Been liaising with a guy on IG who makes awning brackets for GFC etc. He has visited SP and developed a bracket that works for heavy duty 270 awnings like the ARB and provides additional support from the back rail. Apparently he is going to be making them for SP and they should be available in the next month or so.
