you could maybe just slide the camper back a foot or so, that way you dont need to lift it and it should give maybe enough room to work?

 

Yeah that would provide enough room. Even just 6 inches back. But I think it would have to be lifted. The bulb seal underneath had double sided adhesive if I recall.

 

I sealed that area from the inside back when I had a fiberglass canopy.
Ran a bead of silicon across the seam in the bed. Yes I realize that only hides the issue, but it's been dry so far.

Haven't had much serious rain, but if I notice more leaking back there, I'll raise the camper onto some stacked 2x4s and pull the cap to seal it properly.

Like you, I plugged the corner gaps well, but forgot about the sealing the end cap.

 

Well... I was waiting for the final confirmation email from SP and to send the $75 transfer fee before announcing and making changes.. but.. I'm just too excited and cant hold out anymore. We snagged Beboman 's spot last week! Transfer Docs are signed and Deposit paid... just need to finalize it with SP, hopefully this week.

 

Yeah I should be able to get away with sealing from the inside. I don't camp or travel in rain that often, though planned trips to CO and elsewhere will guarantee some rain. The cab over will prevent rain from reaching most of the bed except perhaps while driving.

Mostly annoyed I could have easily avoided this issue but didn't.

 

As someone who is waiting for their build to be done still and reading through this, assuming I should preemptively remove that rail in the back to seal underneath with caulking/silicone? I am fairly new to truck life and got mine with all intentions of getting a tent camper before settling on the SP, want to make sure I am preparing properly. Advice is much appreciated here!

 

I'll be doing the same. gathering info and opinions from everyone and try to prep it as much as possible before install.

 

i have a couple areas i am trying to seal as well. I picked up some epoxy syringes to try and seal some gaps I have. might help with tight corners i also need to seal the bed storage as I see water coming through this after all the rain i just drove through. work in progress still.

i did score a free factory bed mat partially cut for fridge on the right side which goes with what I already have.

you could try buying plastic or metal pipe attach it too the caulk gun and try running a bead along the front between the glass but I know its a tight fit.

 

I'm still thinking I might glue or tape a plastic straw to the caulking gun and see if that will allow me to silicone in 8-10" or so from the side. I think that would cover me for most issues from all but the worst rain.

 

Yes, definitely do that before install while it's easy to do. Easy to remove, just 5 torx bolts. I also removed the plastic bed rails on the side, cleaned and taped them (HVAC/aluminum tape) and then put down silicone to seal them. You'll want to do that before install as well. The goal is to eliminate both dust and water intrusion.

Not mentioned are the two D-rings on the bed near the tailgate. They can let a little dust in as well. I won't be able to use them much so I just unscrewed the bolts, siliconed around them and reinstalled.

For the holes in the bed cubby you can use silicone to cover them, or if you want something simple a former TW member makes 3-d printed covers for them. Only one on that list I wasn't sure of was "metal bed rail strips". This could be the other one that needs to be done before camper install. The other stuff can mostly be done before or after.

 

Quick tip on the ExPed mattress. I've noticed that if I remember to open up the fill holes and let it self-inflate for an hour or two before bed, it's almost 100% full. I only have to use the hand pump for 10 or so pumps to get it as solid as I like it. I've read some posts that complain about how long it takes to pump it up, and I think maybe people aren't letting it self0inflate.

It's important when self-inflating to follow ExPed's specific directions. They say to insert the little dongle attached to the inflation port into the valve. This allows more air in. They also suggest opening the exhaust valve and pinching the valve together so that it's kind of pinched open, allowing air in (they caution to remember to "unpinch" it when closing it once full, so it isn't damaged). I've done both these things and the mattress inflates like I said to 95% in about an hour, maybe a little more.

 

I have 3 Exped and they are awesome. The first time you use it, give it 24 hrs to self inflate, and then everytime after that it's about an hour or so.

 

I have an Exped Deepsleep and store it with both valves open. That way when I go to altitude it ensures it doesn't over-inflate.

I know SP provides the regular Exped but the Deepsleep isn't as thick and still comfortable. Wondering if those of you who have your SP's could store all your sleeping gear if using a less thick pad.

 

Well, add us to the list, we got our SP X1 installed on our 3rd gen Tacoma today. We had a great experience from start to finish with Spencer, Peter, Cindy and the rest of the SP team. After running various RTT’s for numerous years on various trips (Article Ocean,Trans Labrador Highway…) and a Jeep JK with a Ursa Minor, the Tacoma-SPX1 seems to be the Goldie Locks for our car camping needs. I would just like to say thank you to you guys for providing my wife and I with a treasure trove of reading and reference material regarding the Tacoma-SPX1 combo.

It’s possible I suppose, but my guess is the deep sleep and regular Exped are about the same thickness when deflated. So if you are going to deflate it to store more sleeping stuff, it probably won’t make a huge difference.

 

For those who have gotten into electrical, how did you wire up the USB/plug that came with the camper?

When I plug female spades onto the blades there isn't enough room behind in the pillar to re-install this plate. Using 10awg wire as that is what I have left right now. Maybe smaller wire would bend more and provide enough room? I could bend the female spades to the side but that seems kinda ghetto...

 

I added a spacer on the plug to make it stick out further until I have a better plan. The pillars at the cab are deeper and easier to add outlets to if you hadn’t noticed yet.
