I only have 4 clamps total, definitely want 6 total minimum so I’m glad they added the additional 2.

I have USAA for insurance. They added my camper at the value of replacement at that time which was the $10k level at no additional cost to my yearly premium. No receipt needed I just have them the name and model.

Make sure to pack a gas can or two. A couple of rec's there. If you think you need Gas get it. If you get gas and the others say we can get it later. Get gas anyway. If anyone is S/C make sure you stock up anytime you see premium. It exists but it's slim picking middle of Baja. And as a just in case carry a few bottles of Octane booster.

I had read an article and had some booster but at least twice stopped for gas and the guys said lets get it later. Turns out the next Gas was closed. the next one after that had only 87/88. Ran into some lady that was told us if you see it get it because it could be gone tomorrow. Ran a tank and half of regular with some Lucas Octane Booster. Not ideal ut worked out. From San Felipe down to Villa Alberto or so if you spend a bunch of time in the mounts non-highway 1 you will not see any Premium if you or anyone needs it.

On the way down there are a few spots with Autozones and Gas Stations but def a lot of gaps of nothing. Tend to avoid the random trucks with water jugs of gas.

In the end it will be a fun trip.

What parts are you going, how long?, how far down?

@justrussell what did you have to provide to USAA? They're my insurance co also. they are awesome!!

@tacomeg Like @nudavinci64 says, get gas every time you can and a 10 gallons extra The 5-10 minutes is well worth the hours of pain.... I've spent heaps of time surfing BC and it happens. Have fun, be safe, fish!

I literally just called them and gave them the details verbally. Make , model, value and they said I was good to go. No rate increase.

We're planning on taking 6 weeks. We could possibly take a little longer, but I don't want my 10-year-old to miss too much school. It will take us a while just to get to the border from WA. I hope to make it all the way to Cabo. We're planning on stopping to see relatives in Prescott, AZ and then crossing at San Luis or Mexicali and heading for San Felipe. After that, we're still figuring it out. Trying to read a lot and watching youtube.

Planning on bringing extra gas. I don't have a swingout on the back of our truck, so not sure I can swing a ton. Our last trip, we put a couple rotopax on the roof rack. I bought the truck last year from my brother when he decided to convert a Promaster into a camper. I jumped at the chance to ditch my Subaru and buy the Tacoma. Trying to get deferred maintenance on the truck done, so I can focus more on the trip planning.

@nudavinci64 How far did you go and how long did you take? Please send me any recommendations you have for spots you especially liked. Also, spots you think best avoided for safety reasons. I know you were also traveling with your kiddo.

Yah let me send. My son is 3 but good times. we went 75% of the down. @frenchee went all the way to Cabo. But we were majority together the entire time. A few good spots. There are lots of “camps”. San Felipe is the busy area so we had little time there. But I’ll send you where we stayed.

After missing gas I had my swingout but also tossed one in the bed. We f you swing by your welcome to borrow to borrow some. I have a couple flat rotopax 4 gallons Thy work nice for on top.

Safety, avoid camping Ensenada and above. Go on iOverlander and you'll see the comments around there lol.
For gas, it depends how you define your trip itinerary. Gas is available along the 5 and the 1 relatively consistently but there are some long stretches.
When you come off the 1 or the 5 to truly explore Baja, that's when gas gets tricky. The sand and dirt really bogs you down and your MPGs drop to single digit (in my case).
To prepare, purchase the "Nat geo Baja" map on Gaia. That actually has little gas station signs and from my experience, they were all accurate except Puertocitos. I was also pinning all the gas I saw on my Gaia but got lazy so unsure I will share that.
As @nudavinci64 said, I went down to cabo. My trip was a total of 21 days. The longest no gas stretch I know of on the 1 and 5 is on the 1. Between Guerrero Negro and Rosiaro de Arriba there is NO real gas station and its a VERY long stretch. I saw the occasional dude selling it out of cans but I would not rely on him being there. I ran into a dude that slept on the 1 overnight cus he ran out. Luckily I had a jerry and gave him enough to make it 30 miles to Rosiaro. The 1 and 5 are VERY sketch to drive at night. Pitch black two lane with semi trucks flying past you (blinding you) and cattle / animals grazing the road.

I know of some very nice spots in baja sur and one up north to safely camp before entering the border. That is a pretty sensitive spot so PM me for the info.

Here is the stretch I talk about.
I was booking it back up to Cali so drove it straight. Its 225 miles. If you split off to Bahia de Los Angeles, you can get gas there but you see the detour. What you need to understand is that if you want to enjoy the coast (in yellow) that forces you off highway 1 and eat up gallons as you get onto dirt roads. So that's really when you need extra gas considering its a 225 mile stretch without stopping.
I preferred the sea of Cortez side but highlighting the riskier gas area IMO.

This assumes you don’t need premium 91. If you do need 91 everything gets harder. I was also keeping track of what each station has on my Gaia but I believe I stopped logging at one point.

I’ve bought plenty of gas from the roadside and barrel and jug sellers. It’s fine.

I need premium quality gas so at least for my setup the roadside gas won’t cut it. For most its fine if they are there. even then gas can be sparse.

Haha to each their own… just pack that octane booster

I would be lying if I didn’t consider it mid way after hours of seeing go gas.

I’ve spent months at a time in the area you mention has no gas and others. Locals use it too. If it’s junk, the guy isn’t in business.
