Thanks. Driving from Texas but we were both military and have been stationed in cold climates. Really looking forward to seeing and experiencing this camper. I really want to give positive feedback and get more people interested. We are thinking if camping on BLM land on the return trip. Don’t know if this will be possible with the weather. Hopefully it’ll be a warm winter lol

We’re probably driving in on I84. Wanted to steer clear of California and it would be a longer route.

Texas to Portland has a bunch of possible routes, any of them could be in poor condition at the specific time. Don’t have too rigid a plan so you can flex based on weather. There is lots of public land that allows dispersed camping between the two.

im will be doing the CA drive up but likely will just hit it straight. Will not have my normal camp setup and with pending winter good chance it could be wet and pretty damn cold so if needed hit up a hotel on the way.

Seriously. Shit goes quick. Was fishing the upper rogue last Thanks Giving next to Shady Cove. Snow was pouring down. Guy told me GTFO town if you wanna make it to Bend . (where I was going next). I packed my crap and headed off onto the 62 and drove to Bend. Shit was crazy. Didn't see anyone for miles.
Got some good pictures. Roads covered in snow. Bend covered in snow. Would not want to cross the range again like that alone at night.
Good times though, beautiful and gave me a sense of adventure. I drove 152 miles in that weather, going well into the evening.
The 62 was the most sketch, then it turns into the 230 then 138 then 97 to bend.

yeah something along those lines. Worst case we stop once in Oregon or near for the night. We had to do that last time and we were only heading from Shasta.

Last summer I came down from Seattle to San Diego and spent the night at my sisters in Portland. The directions of go south on I-5 forever hurt my feelings so I headed east around Shasta and cut over to through Lassen Volcano to 395. Probably not a great plan for the Bay Area types but for a more scenic route it’s a solid option.

Very possible. Just bring a warm sleeping bag and layer up. I sleep in the back of my camper when it snows/ rains. I get I’d say at least 10C temp difference from my crappy thin RTT. And no moisture. It’s still OK sleeping in RTT if you bring correct bag n clothes.

This was in downtown Maupin Oregon. Think the deschutes IPAs on tap were $2.75 there. Knocked out real quick in the back of my truck

It might be a longer distance but it could still be faster to take a southern route on I-8/I-10 through NM, AZ, and SoCal. Shouldn't have to deal with winter driving conditions and there is easy camping not far from the freeway until you get close to SD or LA. Heading north on I-5 or up the coast the weather will be good until north of Redding. It would be worth doing this one direction on your trip.

I've driven from San Diego home to Vancouver twice for Xmas, both times going up the coast and back down I-5. The second return trip included a sketchy drive over Siskiyou Pass between Ashland and Redding with the highway closing shortly after I got through. I'm planning to take the coast route on the way back and make a bunch of stops. So much cool stuff to see with the OR coast, redwoods, Hwy 1, Santa Cruz, Big Sur, etc. East from Socal there are lots of cool places to stop as well - Anza Borrego east of SD or Joshua Tree from LA, Saguaro National Park, etc.

My maxxis bighorn were TERRIBLE in snow. I mean the first gen ABS sucks, but in general it was just dangerous. Even braking in advance, driving slow ,etc. Traction was just terrible. Going around a turn I was like tokyo drift at crawl speeds.
I'm getting K02's just because they should be slightly better in snow. Man it was bad with those MT in snow.
I actually plan to buy a nice set of chains to keep in my truck since I do a bit of traveling alone. Good to have that extra grip if needed.

I hated my K02 in snow too, was not a fan. Any wet surface they never impressed me but could have been more the ABS being on but yah the KM3 prob are similar to the Maxxis as an MT.

Damn I heard they aren't great in the snow, but then again anything good in the snow is a dedicated snow tire... So I hope it's an upgrade over my MT.

yah take what you can get I guess. I may go back to the K02 my next tire if I am hitting more wet conditions. I went to the KM3 because its great in almost all direct conditions and I kept finding myself in muddy conditions more so than snow. Normally I try to run an A/T to have decent in most conditions.

After my last long trip in the snow, I said I had enough. Rather get a little more with AT even if I only see snow few times a year.
Yeah its a less agressive looking tread and I prefer MT tread but is what it is.
