Re: Spacers and the metal bed caps

Got this email from SP after telling them about my decision to go with the metal bedcaps. Guess I should have asked if there was an extra cost. Did anyone else get a $500 upcharge for that?

Also sounds like more covid delays. NBD for me, I am making the pickup trip into a ski trip so later in January is not a problem.

Hey Hikerbox, just following up here.
With the aftermarket bedrails you've got, we'll need to include an adaptor kit for the entire bed rail when we install your camper. Just so you're aware, there is an additional charge of $500 for the adaptor kit.
As for timing on install dates here's the latest on where we're at: As I'm sure you've heard global supply chains have been a bit unpredictable over the past year in the manufacturing world. Following some material shortages that we endured over the summer, we've spent August & September getting caught up on fulfilling a large number of orders that had been delayed due to a temporary shortage of our custom extruded aluminum rails. We've gotten our aluminum rail supply back on track and moved through a big number of installs, but as we've worked through the bottleneck, we are running a bit behind our original completion estimate for your camper.
We've been hard at work securing redundant suppliers and vendors, but supply chains continue to be a bit unpredictable on a host of materials right now, so we're having to wait until all the necessary parts for your build actually arrive in-house before we can confirm an install date.
I'll plan to reach out in another 5-6 weeks with an update on our progress and by then I hope to have a clearer picture of when we can confirm your install date.
Let me know if you have any questions Mike.
    Take care,
    Josh

Is there an advantage to them?

The stock caps are plastic and were partially crushed from my old fiberglass topper, also impossible to seal against dust. I'm thinking the metal caps + spacer will be a lot more stable than stock.

Got it. Mine didn’t seem too bad a little cracked when I removed my shell. The added space I’m not a huge fan of. The spacer up front bugs me SP added.

@Hikerbox when did you put your 75% payment down? Curious to know where the rest of us sit in the schedule process. Mahalo.

I got the 12-week notice august 16 but told them to hold off for me until January so I can make the trip out to OR a ski trip. I put the 75% down in early September.

@Hikerbox Thanks! May 2021 75% deposit. Got an email from Josh and Peter today, "Just another quick update on your camper: We’re still just waiting on the anodized corner hardware for the hardshell tent to arrive – the latest ETA direct from the vendor is for the middle to end of next week. Just as soon as it’s arrives here I’ll reach out to get you scheduled for your install. Sorry that it keeps dragging out like this, but getting material on time has been a distinct challenge over the past couple of months, never a dull moment. That said… we’re very close now!" Hoping this finally all gets done. Looking forward to getting up north and then traveling back down fly fishing along the east side.

whats everyone's opinions on the $11,995 price point for the switchback x1 nowadays? any of you early movers consider an alu-cab at that price point?

i was considering one last year, but just had a baby so the timing wasnt right so unfortunately missed out on the earlier pricing.

Being local, I met Spencer and saw one of the early prototypes right before they moved to their new facility. So i dont need any convincing regarding build quality and thoughtfulness of the design. It is certainly well thought-out and well put together. You can tell they have a passion for what they do and it comes through in the end product they put to market.

Would anyone go a different route nowadays? Alu-cab? Project M shell?

Way too high of a price. Even though it’s lighter, I’d go with a 4wheel camper for that price range.

Hopefully economies of scale and business decisions will tighten up to allow them to drop the price and still make their profit margins.

If I were to choose between the two I’d go with the 4WC. Simply because you can get an RV loan for it and also because you can also get jacks for it so you can remove it anytime you want and use the truck as a truck.

Yep, forgot about the loan part. A lot of people don’t have cash to drop on this out of pocket.
I talked to a guy with a tacoma and a 4WC, and he wanted a wedge, but couldn’t finance, so that made the decision easy for him.

Yup that’s definitely one good benefit about 4WC. Wish other canopy campers did the same lol!

you can finance a project M?
yea thats something thats preventing me from going alu-cab, truck wouldnt fit in my garage for when i need to do basic maint. Certainly project M has that appeal, although optioned out it would probably be $15k+

I’ve had a 4WC fleet. Way Too heavy and too wide for any type of off-roading. Fleet had to stay at home from my Moab trip last year. It was a wise decision. Weight is an important consideration. I’m very happy with my move to an X1. All toppers are a place to store your stuff and a place to sleep.
I can’t see prices coming down or wait times decreasing. 2-3 years ago there were just a few camper/wedge builders. I can’t count how many have popped up. They all have long wait times. Should jump on something now before prices increase and wait times become longer.
