I think you're going to love it. Especially with the GF. My wife loves the thing now. "can you preheat the tent" while we sit by the campfire was the norm. lol then shortly after off to bed.

We'll be coming back down during Thanksgiving week as well. Depending on weather and stuff.. we may stick around up there and explore.. or just shoot back down towards us and maybe do some local-ish camping instead. Possibly the Grand Canyon or some of our other go-to spots.

Would be cool to meet up with some of ya'll along the way. even for just a beer or a one night camp spot. We'll be looking for places to camp (dispersed primarily) on our way back to Arizona from Portland.

I've camped in my truck in one way or another for four winters without a heater - that said adding one will make it exponentially easier to dry out wet gear, preheat before bed, and if i get confidence in this dickinson i might end up running it all night because why the fuck not.

The Mr Buddy might not be as damp in that part of the country too, especially if you run the fan. Here in the NW we are basically trading wet air from the Mr Buddy with just slightly less wet air from outside HA

I used one in my old tiny house camp trailer and always was wiping the windows off to keep water from pooling up - of course I didn't have them open which would change things.

also here you go, nerds. I'm testing two different configurations for the chimney (this vs flush mounted).

Cool, I will use it as a pre-heat. Prob not worth having on at night with sleeping bags. Morning will be nice too!

When are you driving down? I'm tagging along with a buddy of mine that writes down the itinerary on paper. So right now it's a little iffy on where we will be and what dates, but I will get better understanding as the trip gets closer.

that's what we mostly used it for. before bed and waking up.

Install is Monday the 22nd at 2pm. after that.. :notsure: just winging it really. keeping an open schedule for weather conditions.. if its nice, we may hit the coast, show my wife the Redwoods and maybe Crater Lake (although winter road closures are going to make that route kind of awkward) then cruise the coast down... or stay on the East side of the Sierras and drive down. no idea.. lol There are some nice hot springs around mammoth I camped around a couple years ago.. might go there again. just depends on weather and the route it creates.

    A few factors:
    • Dickinson recommends a certain length pipe for a horizontal exit. After speaking with them it sounds like the fireplace will still function with a shorter pipe but not at 100% efficiency. I need to test that and see how much the output is reduced - my hypothesis is that it won't matter in such a small space anyways
    • The original pipe that I had was older and quite stiffer than the one in the photo (I ordered a new on from Dickinson) so previously I wasn't certain I could make the bend based on how close the stove is to the wall and where the flange is that connects it to the pipe on the wall exit. The new pipe has a bit more flex so it might work I just am hesitant to chop up another 100$ pipe only to find out my geometry was bunk. If that's the case, though, I'm going to mock up a spacer to bring the stove out and up in order to meet the exhaust.
Ultimately I plan on testing both scenarios to see what makes more functional sense. If I keep the pipe full length and exit out/up like in the photo above then I'm planning on creating a silicone flange and compression plug so I can remove it easily in the summer.

unrelated to heat: as anyone screwed into the end panels? How well does that honeycomb stuff accept fasteners? I've upgraded to the new vented panels and want to use my old one as a tabletop.

Oh yeah, winter closures up there can be a pain. I remember one year during thanks giving week I was fishing steelhead in Rogue River shady cove area and it started pouring down snow. I hopped in the truck and went all the way to bend going through 62 and 230. It was over a foot of fresh snow on the highway with no one around. Going over the pass with no one in sight for a hundred miles or so was one of the weirdest feelings. It kept dumping and dumping. I woke up in Bend with all the roads snowed over. Crazy time. Unpredictable weather up there lol.

Can you easily remove during summer time? Or will it be in year round?

should be super easy to remove during summer - the chimney is just tension fit onto the stove so it pulls right off.

Any 2nd. gen owners that have successfully wired the X1 third brake light with both DRL and brake light capabilities care to share their secrets? I have tried the SP method of black wire-tail light, red wire-brake light and white-ground and I keep blowing the brake light fuse. I am using positaps. I can get brake or DRL but not both....Pics would be a bonus.

    TIA

Alright, found my stick of 6061. Going to cut it to length tomorrow and start playing with it more. So far.. I think it might work out pretty well. My biggest hurdle is going to be figuring out my water tank honestly. I'll need to space it at least another 5/8" off the Molle Panel that's 1/8" thick for a total of 3/4" spaced from the T slot. I'm glad I found this out now though and not up there. I'll get some stock and work or cut some 2x4's up, space it, then strap it back up. That should make enough room for this bar idea and the X1 tab.

Ended up going with 3/4 x 2-1/2" bar. Its over 6 foot long though and hanging off the truck, so its slightly angled when trying to lay it down to fit.

Where it sits with the water tank as is.

Here you can see the ~1/8" gap between the T slot and bed height. It only protrudes 1/4" with the water tank in place as is. I plan to fill that gap with another piece of 1/8" x 3/4" or 1" aluminum flat stock. It will be sandwiched between the top bar and T slot and the bolts ran through it all with nuts inside the T slot.

This is where it "needs" to sit. per our measurements and thinking. 3/4" off the T slot.

Shifting that bar towards the rear to get the 3/4" overhang overall from T slot for the X1 tab to locate on, leaves 1" to mount to the T slot and 3/4" of contact on the top of the bed (total of 2-1/2"). I figured between the bolts (thinking 6) and some 3M tape and or Butyl Tape underneath and in key areas will really stick this thing down and seal it up nicely.

That looks awesome! I think you have that spot on. If you have a metal distributor, and there should be one near you, you may ask them if they do have any of the stock material in the size you want. Save you from having to put together different pieces.

I went to our local IMS and grabbed it. Already tried to put in an order at work through our usual supplier (Coast Alu.). nobody stocks that 2.75" width. If they do, its days out. Checked it all this morning. was about 42 bucks for 13lbs of 6061.

I think it'll work out nicely. I'm modeling it up now, then just need to Program it, and grab an available machine this week at work, and knock it out.

You have all of the cool tools!! Keep us posted on how it all fits (pictures obviously) and how it works with SP. It will rain up there, but once you start getting further east the drier. I spent a couple of days on the coast and it was unreal! Wish I would have brought a board and wettie because it was firing one day with offshore winds.

It is fun... sometimes. sometimes its straight up stressful and shitty. lol

Ok good to know. I'd love to find a place on the coast to camp. I know its going to be raining and cold.. but I still want to make this drive worth it.

SO here's what I'm thinking. I think I'm just going to make it and see what happens. If its an issue, it can easily be unbolted and we're back to square one. I'm hoping this will make it like a 3rd gen and they can just adapt that to mine. IDK..

4x M8 x 1.25 Socket head screws by 22MM long. With appropriate hardware.
