    I mounted my Zamp panels directly into the SP extrusion. The feet that aren’t mounted to the extrusion are secured with VHB. I figured as long as two of the feet are bolted to the SP it’s not going to fly away. VHB has been holding with no issues. Load bars are Alucab. I think this is as low profile as it gets for rigid panels. I left a spot open for where I put my kayak.

    Ah...My apologies, I worked with a manufacturer for them. I've been working with them for several years on other projects and they produce some top shelf stuff for sure.

    Can some of you guys discuss (or link to posts) the mattress and bedding storage situation on your SP? I’ve found a few posts that mention it but obviously this thread is very long and I’ve probably missed some posts.

    It sounds like the tolerances are tight and closing the SP is sometimes difficult. Is that with the mattress inflated? Does deflating solve that problem completely or not? Several posts have mentioned not being able to store blankets and pillows up top. Do they not fit where the removable panels are? It seems like you’d have 4 inches of empty space right there on those removable panels for a pillow on one side and a folded up blanket on the other, do you not? Or do the panels have to be removed when you close it?

    This is a pretty big issue for me, I often roll into my campsites really late and if I’m around other people I hate running that little electric motor to inflate a mattress. Those little inflators are tiny but they are really loud. I own a Terrapod RTT for my Cruiser it’s also very low profile and that daily deflating and inflating is my least favorite part of it. Even with my mattress deflated and no blankets, closing that Terrapod is a complete pain in the ass. It takes me no less than 3 trips around the outside to tuck in all the material as I close it. The videos I’ve seen on the SP make it look better but it sounds like it may also not be quite as easy as they make it look.

    This is a great thread about a pretty intriguing product. Thanks for all the info you guys have put out.

    I deflate to make room for the insulation kit. To do this, I pull my bedding downstairs and just fold the mattress in thirds and lay on it for like 10 seconds. The bedding gets stored in a sling on the front wall that I got from Amazon.

    The panels can be there when you close, but the tent does gather some in that area so I wouldn't count on it for extra space per se. I don't think having to spend a few seconds to assemble the bed should be considered a deal breaker given how great the product is overall.

    You can let the mattress self inflate over a few minutes - gets to maybe 80-90% but still definitely sleep-able at that fullness if you don't want to run a pump. The Exped also comes with a small hand pump if you want to top it off quietly. Granted, I've found that running a small electric pump for 1-2min to fill the bed up completely isn't that big of a deal and anyone who's annoyed by it really shouldn't be. Packing up and closing the camper can be done in literally like 3 minutes or less. Tent closing takes no laps around the truck and can be done by just standing on the tailgate and sweeping your arms on each side as you close to ensure the fabric makes its way into the extrusion.

    Thanks. Just to kind of insight I was looking for.

    Have any of you used an Exped DeepSleep? It’s just like the megamat except 3” instead of 4”. I own both and have slept on them many times and I don’t feel a difference between the two. I wonder if that one inch would make things much easier.

    I think a few members use the deepsleep. I hunt a decent amount in my SP which means fast deploy/takedown. I always leave a sheet on the exped. On setup, I ditched electric and use the hand pump. Takes max 60s (probably closer to 30s) to top off if you let it self inflate like @gnardoggie said. I either sleep with a quilt or a 20 degree backpacking bag. Both are very quick deploy/takedown with a stuff sack. I've left bedding up top spread evenly with no issue as long as it's not super bulky and the mattress is deflated. I keep pillows on top of panels where the mattress ends like you mentioned

    I'm going to give the Hest more nights this year to give it a fair judgement. It's bulkier and can't store bedding up top but don't need to inflate. Could always go that option

    I own the DeepSleep myself and I've laid on the MegaMat as well. Three inches is fine- even for a side sleeper. I will say, the DeepSleep does NOT come with a pump. However, Exped makes a pump bag that does a fantastic job. I can inflate my DeepSleep in less than a minute with just a couple fills from the pump bag. Also, it makes ZERO noise! MegaMat comes with the little baffle pump which you can use in a pinch to fully inflate if the foam is being stubborn, but it will take a few minutes.

    I'll echo what others said. Inflating/deflating is not a big deal at all. I don't have the insulation kit and I usually stash pillows, sleeping bags and blankets into stuff sacks and they ride in the cab or on top of my my cabinet in the bed. When there is nothing up top I just open the release valve on the exped and sit on it. That lets out enough air to be able to close the camper. I can leave my sleeping bag and one blanket up top but I need to run the electric pump to remove more air. Sometimes it can still be tight to get it closed. Even removing a bunch of air it doesn't take long to air it back up next time I set up. Maybe 1 minute without letting it self inflate? It's closer to 15-20 seconds when no bedding was up there. If I'm trying to be quiet I let it self inflate for a while first and/or pull my sleeping bag over the pump to muffle the sound, or I use the little hand pump. The pump is no more disruptive than the noise of pulling a vehicle in, and with the bag over it you can barely hear it.

    Getting the camper closed is easy. Standing on the tailgate end I pull both sides of the tent towards the middle and then tuck the back of the tent in. Pull both sides again, check nothing is hanging out and the latches should close. There are only two latches at the back and since you can pull all the tent material from the back there is no need to walk around the truck and tuck in. Opening it is even easier. Pop two latches and push up, then open the inflate valve on the mattress and it will mostly self inflate. Takes less time to do than it took me to type that.

    I use the snozzle bag with my megamat. It’s awesome. I also use it with their backpacking pads and it only takes a couple minutes and it super easy

    Does anyone have any advice on what to use as a seal between the bed of the truck and the X1? I'm planning on buying a used X1 and I'm trying to think through all the details before I show up at the seller's house. Previously I had a softopper on the truck and it had a 1" foam seal between the frame and the bed, but I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with specific products or has specific advice on swapping campers.

    Thanks, that was super helpful. I ended up finding this video that goes really deep about weatherproofing and sealing not only the camper to the truck bed, but also any point inside the Tacoma bed that could let in water or dust.

    The bulb seal you linked is the exact one they use in the video. Just figured this would be worth chucking into the forum in case anyone in the future is looking for a thorough way to seal things up.

    I found this post around the time I got my camper. It's a pretty solid list of all the places you need to seal to make the bed / camper waterproof and dust proof:

    Front rail: remove and seal with silicone

    Front Bed Corners: remove bed caps and fill area with rubber butyl

    Metal Bed Rail Strips: Remove and silicone

    Plastic Bed Caps: Remove and silicone

    Rear Bed Corner Opening: Fill area with rubber butyl

    Plastic Cubbies: Fill hole in cubby with silicone, seal bed cubby edges with silicone

    Drainage Bed Holes: Fill with silicone

    Tailgate: Use ESI Tailgate Seal from Amazon

    100% dust and waterproof


    My addition to the list: The two D-rings on the bed near the tailgate. They can let a little dust in as well. I wasn't be able to use them with my build so I just unscrewed the bolts, siliconed around them and reinstalled without the D-rings.

    Will be going back and doing this all soon enough. I'm rocking #42, and it's been great with various pitfalls. I ripped out my build out when I got the X1 from a past setup and next up will be working on a full electrical build out w/ 80/20. My X1 looks like its been through a few wars. chips in the powder coat, more dust than i would like and water tend to get in more than I like but its an early version.

    In the spirit of waterproofing. All this sounds good for the lower section. What have folks considered for the top? this past year, I had bent my axle, so the truck sat for the most part for about a year. It rained a ton for our area and the truck was closed up. When I went to open it up last week the sheets on my matress up top had mildew from water intrusion (it sat at a shop for about 6 months). Sleeping bags and mattress seem to be ok but it still show that water was seeping in with long exposure to rain. Not ideal by any means. Do the newer ones fight this better or any tricks to help with the sides?
