    just to clarify the options

    entune nav (w/ JBL?)
    TRD Sport Package?
    SR5
    Tow Package

w/ all these options (w/ non JBL entune nav) the msrp should be more like 32,120 of which you should be able to get this for $29,200 or less.

without the trd sport package the msrp should be 29,065 and a good price would be $26,300

so what's the actual options / msrp?

It's actually listed list the jbl. Here's a better listing for you.

    2014 DC PreRunner LB V6 2WD
    TRD Sport Package
    Tow Package
    Entune w/ JBL w/ Nav

I might want the reg bed though. What should I try to get for the above and what should I try to get for the same minus the JBL part and the long bed?

I just ordered a 2014 Tacoma TRD Sport 4X4 tow package, access cab, Auto, no Nav with Entune, no floor mats, for 31,280 plus TTL. That is a Costco price.

I will finally have a new Taco heading this way!!!

Thanks for all the info and tips you guys gave me along the way!

Up here, Greater Boston/Eastern MA area, I was shopping used, but find the prices very discouraging and am now considering new.

Getting quotes now, a bit confused about the process, as they seem to quote what they have, so, if I do not want, say, Entune, I have to buy it anyway...

Just joined the forum but I have been lurking for weeks. Here is what I paid for mine:
2014 Tacoma, double cab, Auto, 4X4, TRD Sport, Etune JBL w/navi, Tow package Color is White with gray interior.

    MSRP $34,975
    I paid $32,475 Plus fees

It took me almost a month to find this color combo at a dealer that was willing to give me a decent discount.

First offer by dealer on 12/28/2013
    $32,700
    $16,000 Trade-in
    $16,700 Difference + TTL

Get up to walk out and the manager comes over and asks what is my number. I told them that I wasn't planning on buying a truck and haven't shopped around, so my no-brainer difference was $13,000. He says never. I said okay and told them to call me if they want to make a deal. I leave.

12/31/2013 - I haven't heard back from them. I call and say if you want to finish the year off right or start 2014 off right to give me their best number. The sales person said that the last offer was $15,500 difference. They never called and told me. I said $14,500. He calls back several hours later, just minutes before they are set to close but I didn't answer. On the message he says $14,700 and I can call them on 1/2/2014.

1/2/2014 - before I get a chance to call, the salesperson calls back and says that they'll do $14,700. I say that I'm set on $14,500 and I want the running boards at cost (but not installed, because they kept giving me the $85 per hour labor b.s. and thanks to TW I see that they are super easy to install, so I just say that I'll install them). I get a call several hours later and they say okay. The sales sheet was written up as:

    $32,700
    $18,200
    $14,500 Difference + TTL

In the meantime I went to one other dealer and they were at a difference of $15,700 even with me telling them of the offer I had on the table.

1/4/2014 - I pick her up. They go to order the running boards and the sales person says to the parts guy "is that cost" when he rings me up at $340. I say that seems high for what I saw online. Both confirm. I'm pissy, but don't feel like putting up a fight.

1/11/204 - Running boards are in, but this time I'm willing to play the game. I go in and say that the running boards are only $253 at invoice. I get the b.s. - that the parts department is separate and the $340 is the cost to the sales department. I said that I don't care, that is not the deal I struck. I want cost, not cost to the sales department. Manager comes over to defend the $340 price. I feed them the b.s. that I thought they were an upstanding dealer and weren't going to play games, but now I'm feeling differently. I told the manager, that they just continue to lie to me and tell him that the sales person said that the dealer only wanted to make $1,000 on my used truck and that they were going to put $500-$600 into it and list it for $19,900, but that it is on the lot now $21,500 (and btw they didn't put a dime into it - didn't fix the scratch on the door or even fix the recall and it is already sold as of 1/19/2014).

PS - I also got the extended 7/75k warranty. I'm generally anti-extended warranty, but the next Taco is being sold by me, so I thought it would be very helpful. It was originally offered at $1,195. I said no and got it for $795.

I think that I did okay, but didn't kill it?!?

I managed to buy it at 31,200. Had to go back and forth several times.

The dealer had ordered it but it hasn't come in yet. The paperwork shows it shipped on 1/5/2014 to Massachusetts.

It was exactly what I would have ordered if they let me and I don't have to sit around for toyota to build it so I feel like I'm a little ahead of the game. The waiting is starting to drive me crazy.

Now you guys outside Georgia are looking at that $2125 number and going “WTF???” But that’s the law down here now…you have to pay all the registration fees up front when buying a vehicle and it’s based on their computed value of the car. But now we don’t have to pay registration fees every year. No (legal) way around it. Coming soon to a state near you…
So to do an apples/apples comparison, I’d say take the $2125 off and add in whatever your sales tax and registration number is. I simply paid all my registration up front – you guys will pay each year that you own yours.

    pricing_zps6d748443_327a274b578ab6c990add30bbaad0e2dc00f0d8e.jpg

Winning dealer gave me a vehicle price of $30,178. Add Dealer Fee and Title & GA Lemon Law tax and it comes to $30,875. The invoice on that truck with the options was $30,843 so I paid $32 over invoice. Of course, the dealer got holdbacks (and whatever else they get that we don't know about) from the manufacturer and the distributor. In other words, they don't keep the lights on by selling vehicles $32 over what they pay for them, capiche?

First, MSRP is a fairytale number. It means nothing except as a tool for the buyer to feel good about saving money by buying it at some price below that. Kinda like, if you were born yesterday and knew nothing about cars, this is what we would charge you and you would like it. Dealer Fee should be marked “DEALER PROFIT”. That’s what it is. And they wouldn’t be in business if they didn’t make some. But when they label it as such, it makes you think “oh, that’s how much they’re making.” No, they’re making much more and you’re not sure where. But, good luck getting them to take Dealer Fee off. They won’t. Destination fee – the fee the dealer is charged to transport the vehicle to the dealership – is not an option, per se, and not optional either and it has to go somewhere. And there’s no Invoice price for the Paint Protection and the Toyoguard BS…it’s just pure profit for the dealer if they can get it.) Note that I didn’t want the Paint Protection or the Toyoguard, but in the Southeast, you pretty much can’t avoid having them added unless you special order and wait 2 months. What you can try to do is reduce the total cost of the vehicle and pay less for them. If anyone has succeeded in getting a dealer in the Southeast to remove them from an in-stock vehicle (and not have them add the cost back in through a side door), I’d like to hear about it. Every dealer I spoke with said, “They ‘install’ that at the port…we can’t remove it.” BTW, I have some Toyoguard Elite in my back seat that I’ll sell for the discounted price of $200…that’s $500 off the sticker price.” :D

Anyway, I thought the price I paid for the Tacoma was a good deal - or at least the best that I could get in Georgia at the time. The reason I know that is that I contacted 10 dealers that either had the truck or, I thought, could get the truck in my desired window (< 1 month from the start of my search). The TRD Sport in white was not an easy vehicle to find in the SE...not because they're like rare gems. Southeast Toyota simply has an outstanding handle on inventory and they use it to keep demand frustrated and the price high - something we probably all would strive for if we were car distributors. But I stopped frustrating myself trying to dig for diamonds. I simply told the 10 dealerships, look, I'm buying a Tacoma this week, these options are what I want on it and these options hold no value for me. If you want to sell me a truck (and make some money), find me a truck with the options I need and give me your price. And I stopped playing the “let’s dicker over various options” shellgame. Note above that the bold items are what I REQUIRED and the others were either desired or expected. TRD Sports are all pretty much the same throughout the SE. But some of the colors like white, mica, red and green are tougher to find. If you want a silver or gray (or even black) one, they’re everywhere.

I used the Fighting Chance strategy from James Bragg and it actually took most of the angst out of buying the vehicle. That's because I had the dealers where I wanted them - competing to sell me a truck. That beats the hell out of being where they want you - standing around holding your privates in a showroom waiting to hear whether (A) they can find the truck you want, or (B) the manager will approve the deal you're trying to make.

In the dealership, don't you kinda feel like this? (hint: and you ain't the dog)...
    herding_zps7a80bcb2_7268d0a385ce682532e2f30ece0768232a109d31.jpg

Guys, a truck (or pretty much any vehicle that’s not a Tesla or a Lambo or something) is a commodity – it’s not a specialty item, although the dealer will quickly want to convince you that your truck is very hard to come by (no matter what it is). When buying commodities, go for the lowest bid for the product you want. Don’t let the dealerships try to convince you that THEIR dealership provides something special that all the others don’t. Whatever it is they’re offering, you can get something almost identical down the street. Believe that BS at your peril. Yeah, there are some dealerships that are better than others, but what’s that worth to you?

For you folks buying new, do yourselves a HUGE favor and go to the dealer only to see and test drive vehicles to narrow down your preferences. Don't even remotely suggest that you want to deal no matter what the salesperson says to you. Once you've decided which vehicle you want, do all your research and shopping on the internet and by phone. And get the Fighting Chance buying strategy. It will be the best $45 you've ever spent. In fact, the price differential between the just the FINAL bid and the one before that was $807 – 18x the cost of the strategy. It's not rocket surgery, but James Bragg does a fine job of packaging it all and making it easy to use quickly.

I'm not a shill for the Fighting Chance strategy. Just a happy customer and a hater of car dealers. I imagine there are many out there like me. Fact is, I went to the dealer in Newnan, GA to make a deal initially. I was trying to avoid all the hassle by using the USAA (TrueCar) Buying Service – not dissimilar from Costco or AAA or many other services, I’m sure. The sales guy told me he could get what I was looking for within the week and asked for a $500 deposit. I gave it to him thinking I had secured the truck. He calls me back 2 days later…bad news…it’s been sold. Is there another color you would like instead? Then 2 weeks of playing his games with a couple more different vehicles until I got fed up and realized he was just waiting until his inventory was replenished. He had no desire to get me a truck on my timetable. I felt like a fool. So, I got my deposit back, went online and googled “how to buy a new car” and came upon the Fighting Chance strategy. Good thing that first deal fell through because I would have overpaid by probably $3000 including all the options I wanted at the time. (I took all the options off and I’m purchasing and installing after-market at 1/3 or less of the dealer pricing).

Could I have done even better?...maybe if I was willing to wait until the end of January which I understand is typically the worst sales month for vehicles. I suspect there are salesmen out there working hard to pull in their quota today. But I think that gain would have been marginal and I needed/wanted a truck in mid-Jan. If I was willing to spend even more time researching online and searching for THE rock-bottom deal, or waiting for a custom build, I could have saved a few more bucks. But I think I did alright. I beat the USAA price.

Anyway, that’s what I’ve got to contribute to this thread. I don’t know everything about buying a truck although I sometimes delude myself into thinking I do. I’m not in the car business or even the sales business, but I’ve done a fair amount of research to buy this truck. I hope it helps someone. If I’m way off-base, I’m sure someone on this board will quickly slap me back into reality. And if you want a spreadsheet template to aid in your shopping, PM me with your email addy and I’ll send it.

Oh, and one other source...get the "This American Life" podcast from 12/15/2013 titled "129 Cars". It will give you some interesting insights into the dealership biz. No illusions that TAL was able to get to "the truth", but interesting nonetheless. May shatter some myths. Cheers and happy buying.

Nice info. Thanks! I am in the Atlanta area and looking for an Off-Road TRD package. Can you let me know which dealer finally earned your business? Good write up. Thanks again.

Dear friend, would like to tell a story as to how I bought my first Tacoma...which was just this past Saturday.
First off I am from Alabama so the whole tax, registration cost is completely different. Having said, that the Friday before I bought my 2014 SSM 4x4 Trd dc sb v6, I found three dealers that had the vehicle I wanted in stock. I e-mailed each of them and got a feel for what they would be willing to do without much pressure. I got off work Friday afternoon and drove an hour to what I felt would be a sure thing. After the whole back and forth session that always seems to happen they gave me a final number of $31,230 out the door. I felt I could do better so drove home with purchase agreement in hand.
The next day the wife and I took the quote with us to World Toyota in Atlanta. I quickly told the salesman and manager if they could do any better. Well 30 mins later the sales manager came out and spoke with the wife and I. They destroyed my previous offer. $29,874 with 2% Alabama sales tax included we drove outta there with a big smile on our faces!
Moral of the story? Always come prepared and know your s**t. Save your time by letting the dealer know you don't have to have anything today but could buy if they do a previous offer better. And the whole "We're not making anything on this deal" is bull. I always tell them that a little is better than nothing and nothing is what they will get if I walk.
World Toyota was however a class act to us. Of course all dealerships have their asshats.
    Good luck!

+1 to the "fighting chance"/ James Bragg approach. I got invoice (which is a myth of its own, but I digress), compared to numerous offers of $500 over invoice on a 2014 extended cab but otherwise base 2.7 auto. Of about 12 dealerships approached, about 1/2 responded, and the one that had the truck I wanted on the lot also happened to be hungry... so you can get a good deal, even on a taco. (Just watch out for the $$ upgrades they'll try and hit you with at signing.)

Haggled with the salesman last night. He went down to 30,000$ for a 2014 sr5 v6 4x4 access cab with 16" wheels, entune plus radio, and rubber floor mats. He says invoice is about 29,916. Good deal or not?

Is that $30K out the door (including TTT and everything)? Personally, if I were in a major metro area like you in SF, I'd make the dealers bid for my business.

I like the idea of the last part, if fielding calls and hunting is worth getting that last $100. To each their own, as they say.

Out the door pricing will depend greatly on state and locality. I would also never use that phrase in a negotiation, because it is just a step above "what's my monthly payment gunna be?" in terms of casting the customer as a sweet, yummy li'l mark.
