What Zoo said is right on point. Have you ever done UOA’s to compare wear metals between cheap oil vs well known quality oils? Do you know why only some oils are certified for 10k OCI’s in the European market and most are not? It’s a known fact that oils with higher amounts anti wear additives like moli, zinc, and phosphorus outperform cheaper oils. All you need to do is a little research….

well, it happened to me. guess i should have prefilled my filter or not let the oil drain so long. and, no, it's not the belt.

got one of those free blackstone sample kits. going to submit a sample at my next oil change. I'm working as a delivery driver right now, so i'm on the "severe duty" maintenance schedule.

Whenever you can between the two. I wouldn’t stress it. Good weather and back highway driving mostly? Stretch it out. Stop and go, horrid weather, tons of dust and dirt? Do it sooner.

I'm going to start doing my own oil changes here in the next few weeks and I plan on doing every 5,000 miles. That's what I've doing before and I don't feel a need to change it sooner or really any later than that.

Use a higher quality oil before any viscosity changes. You’d be surprised how much quieter your motor runs with good oil.

I switched from Mobile 1 full synthetic to Amsoil and everything got way quieter. Especially when towing.

Reminds me of the guy that replaced his stock air cleaner with a K&N one then claimed his truck had way more power.

Thats even too early unless in a severe use category. When I had my tundra driving a 50 mile round trip to work everyday, I used mobil1, and their filters doing oil changes every 15k miles, and it was still good. Had that truck for 19 years till I bought a tacoma. Heck I still see that old tundra of mine still running good after all these years. You change your oil with mobil 1 once a year, or every 10k miles these Toyotas will last forever.

I use Amsoil and HPL 0w30. In my experience, using high quality oil with PAO and esthers gives the highest likelihood of long term engine cleanliness and avoiding stuck, coked up rings.

Cheaper group III oils can do 10k+ changes for 200k+ mi, but there’s a higher chance that 200k engine has varnish and burns more oil. GF-6A is an OK spec, but there are better.

HPL helped unstick rings on my 2006 CR-V with 180k mi that had 3,000 mi changes its whole life with cheap oil. After doing my own research and making my own investigations, I am in the camp of using extremely high quality PAO and esther based 30-weight oil for my specific use cases.

Sucked into this thread unfortunately. Yes, would take UOA to determine what is best. But there is also anecdotal evidence and professional anecdotal evidence (from trustworthy technicians). I try to cross-reference the two. I trust the Toyota engineers but they are not the ones in charge. Marketing and sales are.

Anyway, I am thinking that Valvoline 5W-30 may be a good route at a 6-7K interval. Here is a VOA I ran:

These are just plain old 3.5 engines not turboized, or supercharged where you would need a good synthetic, and sooner oil changes. Rest of the truck will likely be toast before these engines will with average use.
