Not sure if any one is aware but the Japanese practiced Biological war fare on Okinawa. They let loose snakes and man do they little sob's multiply. And they are very poisoness. Other things alot of people don't realize also are the Okinawans were and are not japanese. they pride themselves on being separate from japanese.

I still cant believe Basilone died... Choked me up watching him lie there looking around, I wondered what he must have been thinking. I'm all for defending our country, but I cant help to think there has got to be a better way!

SNAFU is a very intriguing character. There is always one Marine in your platoon that just marches to the beat of his/her own drum... and always seems that nothing can rattle them.

Loved the entire series... sad to see it's over, Hanks and Spielberg always put together an awesome performance. Great to see a different side of the war from say Band of Brothers, etc.

    A MUST see

i'll agree to that... his character was wicked and the actor did an excellent job.

it really bothered me when he left the train and didn't so much as say goodbye to his buddy. really made me want to start making phone calls to people i've served with and haven't kept in touch with.

If you saw at the end, right before the credits, he didn't talk to any of his marine friends for 35 years until he read Sledges book that he wrote. Guess that scene kinda showed that.

Speaking for myself I would say he wanted to leave the war and everything about it behind him...and that is why he didn't wake up Sledge. I would have but then again the two of them went thru so much together...

    No doubt!

    Agree 100%

I think there is an upcoming set this weekend or next where they will play episodes 1-5 on Saturday and then 6-10 on Sunday.

I'll be watching it again for sure and I'll be picking up the books as well.

I loved this show, I wish they had made more episodes. My wife was born on the Marshall Islands and I would have liked to have seen them. The only gripe I have is that most of the big battles in the Pacific were boiled down to 15 min.
The best part of the show was the beginning where the real guys were talking about their experiences. I think that these guys are a treasure and so few are left I really want to hear what they have to say. I could listen to them talk for 10 episodes.

I'll be canceling HBO now. I also just bought E.B. Sledge's book "With the Old Breed." I'm sure to have it finished by the end of the year....

I'm on episode 7 right now. Great series so far. It will truly make you appreciate what we all can so easily take for granted, you right as a free, American citizen.

I would also recommend Leckie's book, 'Helmet for my Pillow"

I realized excitedly during the last episode that I have owned this book for several years (its was given to my wife and I just never got around to reading it). But now I am reading it and I can tell you that several scenes involving Leckie are almost exactly, verbatim, out of his book, including the opening battle at Tenaru river, Australia, and when he shot those japs on patrol on New Britain.
