I recently bought a set of used wheels and tires and they were dipped black. I stripped them (pain in the royal a$$) and re-dipped them black this weekend with a good coat of glossifier.

Just curious, but how is CLEAR a color match to Silver or Cement Grey?

Duh you can see through it. They don’t color match Plasti-Dip. If it’s close that’s what you get. If you want it perfect, take it to a shop and have your favorite body man color match with real automotive paint.

There will never be an exact paint match, but with a little bit of patience, research, and know how... you might get close.

How did you get it to go on so smooth? My grill and emblems are dipped but they look rougher...

If you got a texture unsmooth looking finish most likely it's due to dipping in cooler/cold weather, spraying to far away from the surface, or not doing solid wet coats.

To achieve a smooth finish you want to hold the can up right only a few inches away from the surface. Your first coats needs to be light and tacky, but the rest can be heavy wet coats with each pass overlapping the last. If dipping in temps below 65 let the cans sit in warm water between coats and always shake well bebefore each coat.

    Hope this helps.

I dipped my hood scoop also and it's help up great. The key to a long lasting dip surface is going to start with cleaning the surface really well. I like to use rubbing alcohol. After that it's all about the coats and how many you lay down. Nice smooth even coats, laying down at least 4-5. The more the better. I used two cans on my hood scoop.

    Awesome, I appreciate the feedback.

I dipped my emblems in summer and they cam out pretty smooth. I did that keeping the can in warm water trick before each coat.

I did my grill in December and held the can pretty far away from the surface in an attempt to avoid runs. I think that may have been my fatal flaw.

I may have to try to peel the plastidip off my grill and try again...

Derped my rims today with 4 cans on black. Haven’t decided if I’m going to follow through with the glossifier...

I’m terrible with regular spray paint cans i always seem to get runs and the coats i apply are never even. After watching numerous videos on how to plastidip i went for it. I’m very very surprised I have a good finish currently and I’ve read that the glossifier is harder to control. This is making me hesitant to even mess with it. I’d prefer it be glossy but the current look is awesome too. Can any comment on using glossifier?

I should add that I still have to re-apply the Crome Toyota emblems and remove the overspray letting this last coat fully dry first.

I've had no problems with the metalizer. It's like the glossifier with very fine grains of silver in it. You have to lay on a ton if it before it becomes a solid color, so it's hard to overdo it. I believe the glossifier should be same without the metal flakes. Just be sure to apply thin even coatings just like the regular colors. I guess some people want the effect to pop, so they apply it too quickly. At that point, it would probabaly run because you just applied too much clear coat. Go slow and you'll be fine.

Let me first say I don’t have high expectations for how these will do but I am hoping that maybe plastidip will surprise me. I looked online everywhere and could only find 1 or 2 people that ever plastidipped running boards (maybe because you shouldn’t lol) and they never had any follow up to how they held up. I figured it was worth a try before I bought new ones. My hopes are the steps will protect against most of the foot traffic. If itdoesn’t work I will rip it off and get new ones.

At guesses how they will hold up? 3 full cans on these.

Hi Guys. New to Tacomaworld. Bought myself a 2009 Taco recently. Did some Plastidip work on my chrome grill and emblems. Used Anthracite Grey. First photo is the before. Enjoy!
