Pretty sure it was linked in here. someone had found a super light clamshell RTT. Not the GFC one but a different company.
@EatSleepTacos i think I remember you had found it?
After this weekends short trip on the rocks. I was not fond of the extra weight up top.

Do we know if an Exped Megamat will fit into a 50” Mt Hood or small size roofnest falcon or similar size hardshell? It’s a few inches too wide I’m wondering if the sides can just curl up and confirm to the narrow width when it’s inflated? Deflated I would think is not a problem. @EatSleepTacos does your friend with the roofnest run this setup? Seems you’re a good salesman for the Exped.

Next time you inflate yours, could you simulate how it would work if the tent was 5” more narrow than the mat, so 2.5” on each side? I want to know if the mat is flexible enough to sort of ride up the sides or if it would seem like it would tear something.
The mattress that came with my CVT is pretty hard compared to the upgraded mattress we put in our soft shell.

That’s what I would want to avoid. I think if you shift your weight too close to the edge of the tent, it could put tension on the body of the tent and wear out the seams. Maybe I’ll try and add a topper to the existing mattress.

The wife and I want to get into RTT camping. I currently have nothing and looking to do it right the first time. I want to end up with a camper shell, roof rack that’s front of cab to back of camper shell and a RTT and awning mounted. Suggestions for a rack that’ll hold the weight and so I need to get a special reinforced camper shell? Looking at Leer 100xr.

So you want a rack that goes over the cab and over your shell? I’d be concerned about the twisting between the cab and bed of the truck, but don’t know if that would be an actual problem or not.

not one rack, sorry for the confusion. It can be separate racks over cab and cap, just want racks on both that match heights. Was thinking prinsu. Will a rack such as that hold a RTT?

    go with tacodogs setup.
rsi shell with 2 cross bars for a rtt and awning, roof rack over the cab.

could go with an alucab or rld shell too. those metal ones are better for supporting the weight of a rtt from what ive heard

Prinsu will hold a RTT. Camper shells can be an issue over time depending on the terrain you cover. I don't have much experience with shells but I'm sure others will chime in with reinforced or heavy duty options.

You can not mount something across both racks (cab and bed) even if they're the same height. The two pieces flex independently on uneven ground and will twist anything on top, or the racks themselves. Some lumber from the hardware store would be OK, offroading with a RTT is a no. Pick either the bed rack or the cab rack

my thoughts are that I’ll get a standard leer 100xr, place a prinsu rack on both it and my cab, place a RTT on my cab and an awning and other gear over the shell. Sounds like the smartest approach from what I’m reading.

You really don't want to put an Exped in anything narrower than it is. It does not "roll up" or "fold up" on the sides at all. If you need something just slightly narrower (because dang, the comfort of the Exped is SOOO nice), you might try the Exped Deep Sleep Medium (41" wide). GFC also has a 50" wide mattress (Exped compete, that fits in their tents) that they were selling with the Superlite for a while. I don't see it on their web site anymore, but you could call to see if they have any.

Dont really like the RSI smart cap. They're nice and bulky but I don't like that they're not color matched and it's a bit more than I'm looking to spend. The Local leer dealer quoted me $2400 out the door today for a Leer 100XR with sliding side windows (dont want windoors) and roof tracks. Think I'll go that route.

I would get a reinforced camper shell and put the RTT on that. I'm fairly certain the cab isn't designed to hold the weight of a larger RTT, especially with 2 people in it. Plus it'll soften out your rear suspension more when driving vs on the cab. Place the rest of your gear/awning over the cab.

Alternatively, you could get one of those racks that go over the outside of a softopper, if you'd be interested in that route. then you have a camper shell design, but less weight, no need to reinforce, and a rack that's plenty strong enough to hold the tent.

I would think the roof of the cab is stronger than a cap. With the exception of pickups, everyone else puts their RTTs on their roofs. Think of a tent on a 4Runner. Nobody would question the strength of that roof.
