Good to know. That's what I wanted to hear from real world users. I'll check out those alternatives thank you.

So, I think the roof of the cab is likely plenty strong - to your point, lots of other trucks have tents up there.

However, I too would put the tent over the bed for a few reasons.
    1. Aerodynamics - putting the tent further back (as it is likely the thing sticking up the highest) will be better for both gas mileage and wind noise in the cab. Wind noise might even be the "more important/impactful" of those IMO.
    2. Looks - it'll look better to have it further back - again IMO.
    3. Functionality - this is by far the most important reason IMO. If you put the tent over the cab, then when you open it, you'll lose access to at least half of your cab (whichever half it folds out over. Doors will be harder to access, stuff will be harder to get out, etc. Putting it over the bed (shell) means you'll still have access to the cab through all doors.
I personally don't use a shell (I run a bed rack - see my sig), so you may need to reinforce the shell to get the RTT to work there, but I think you'll be happier in the long run.

You’re absolutely right on all fronts. I was just saying that ruling out the roof due to weight capacities alone is likely the wrong message. I have a cap and my tent is on it for all of the reasons you mentioned.

Is there a factory option through Leer to get a reinforced shell? Do we have any TW members running a setup like this? (a standard NON-smartcap camper shell with a RTT that can support a couple adults and a couple small dogs?)

I had a reinforced commercial grade leer 100 on my old 1st gen, It held my ARB rtt for several years and lots of offroad abuse with no issues. I had it mounted on some simple yakima bars that attached to little gutter brackets on the side of the canopy, putting the weight sheer on the sides of canopy is stronger (from what i've researched) than directly on top of the shell. A friend of mine runs his tent the same way on a non reinforced canopy also.

Now i run the same rtt on the cab of my second gen with a mid rise leer shell behind it. This setup works great too, the cabs are plenty strong enough. Something to consider is the 6' reinforced leer i had before weighed atleast double what my current 5' leer 180 weighs.

Many of us run RTTs on top of a non reinforced fiberglass cap. I off road my truck pretty hard and haven’t had any issues, yet. Not saying I won’t or that it’s not possible. You’ll hear talk of them cracking from the added weight, but I’ve never actually seen any evidence of someone doing that.
That being said, it’s something I’m always fearful of happening. I know ARE makes their CX HD which is reinforced to carry more weight. I wish I had bought that one at the time. If you don’t like the looks of the RSI or the RLD then that is a good option. I don’t know if LEER makes a similar model.

Sorry, I should have been more clear.

The cab itself would be plenty strong enough. I'd be more concerned about the mounting points holding up to the weight especially if there's to be any serious offroading involved, not the cab itself. So I guess it would depend what kind of rack he's using, whether it utilized factory mounting points or if he drills more.

But i'm probably wrong anyways. I just over-worry.

The Rhino Rack RTS tracks are a good option for strong cab mounting points. Rivet and Bolt.

Looking for some input from those of you who have traded their factory mattress for an aftermarket one.

Most of what I’ve read on this thread is that the Exped MegaMat is the mattress to get. Has anyone tried memory foam like the Better Habitat CertiPUR mattress with their factory mattress?

There are also cheaper air mattress options than the MegaMat. Has anyone tried those? The Vaneventi double self-inflating camping mattress on Amazon looks decent and is considerably cheaper.

I have the first version of CVT MT. Hood and the mattress that comes with it isn’t up to snuff.

Would any want a *Brand New* Tepui Kukenam 3 Gray cover? I sold my Tepui last year and am cleaning out my storage unit after buying a house.

Disclaimer: This cover came with my Tepui at the initial purchase, but the zipper sewn onto the gray cover was sewn in reverse to the way it’s supposed to be.

Looking for $50.00 plus shipping costs obo. The zipper could be cut off and sewn in the correct direction if you know how to sew or own a machine and could be a cheap replacement. If no interest I will probably just end up cutting this up and making a boat engine cover.

I’ve tried adding memory foam to the existing mattress. It’s comfortable but leaves zero room to store anything else and makes it difficult to close the tent.I have exped plus memory foam and THAT is a comfy combo.

Did you ever check out the Stoic I reviewed in post #22446 & 22468? We love it, & are still impressed with comfort & quality. (You would be able to pick it up from the warehouse in SLC if you wanted one.) It works good in the RTT or a ground tent. I place it right on top of the hard 2 inch foam in the RTT & leave it in there (air out) when we are done. We just used it for 3 nights in Wyoming last weekend.

That mattress looks decent and a good price. Since I have the single channel version of the MT. Hood I don’t have the space to store sleeping supplies in there. I’m hoping I can let enough air out to close the tent.

It’s listed at 4” when inflated. If the air valve is left open do you think it would let enough air to be equivalent to 3” or less in thickness?

Since it doesn’t come with a pump, I assume I could get one off of Amazon?

    Thanks for the tip.

Given enough time it would inflate to 3" or more. 10 - 30 mins, depending on how long it has been compressed. There is definitely an assortment of pumps on Amazon. Not terribly expensive.

My initial thought/concern is the longevity of the seals around the window and how well they would keep rain out over time. Interesting concept though

I’m curious about the same, plus ease of deployment, weight, and how well all those hinged parts hold up over time.
