Ok, so I bought a VooDoo Fab rack for a gear storage solution that is not quite as effective as I had hoped it would be. I've tried to sell the rack at a significant discount, but now that it's been several months, I'm considering going the other direction and getting a tent instead. So what's the best budget entry tent option out there currently?

Random question, but for those of you that leave your tents on 24/7 how many times a year would you estimate you use them?

i had mine on the first year i got it. didnt really have anywhere to store it. the first year i got about 40ish days camping in it. got it in may, got like 30ish days through september. then another 10 or so from october to april the next year.

then i bought an old house with a garage. so the rack and tent came off so i could move and do house things. (i was actually camping in the tent when our realtor called to say our offer was accepted, lol)

just got the rack and tent on a couple days ago and got a camping trip planned this weekend. now that i'm wrapping up house projects im hoping to get another 30ish days in this year. might get a little more with a 2 week oregon road trip planned.

I have mine on the truck from about May till October. I use the tent about 6-8 weekends within that time. Occasionally I will take it off for truck stuff, maybe a couple times when the tent is on during those months. For winter storage I do this…

Appreciate the reply. I’m asking because I’m on the fence, as I have yet to camp since moving a year ago and also wouldn’t have anywhere to store mine. I’m leaning towards just building a sleeping platform in my bed for now.

Plus, most of the places worth camping where I’m at seem to be several hours away. If anything I may just go the DIY route with the Kamp Rite cot as a RTT until I know I’m gonna use it more often.

Edit: currently still in an apartment, but hopefully I’ll be in a house next year assuming the market isn’t still crap

if i solo camped more, i would definitely just sleep in the bed. i actually meant to buy an access cab with the intent on building a sleeping platform, but ended up with a double cab and 5ft bed.

definitely go the diy route and if its not working out think of a new setup

Yeah I’d be going solo most of the time. I had a bed setup in my previous 2nd gen long bed that I really liked. I’ve got a short bed now, but laying down still felt comfortable (I’m only 5’9”).

I think its the opposite. I want to be fast on all the normal bs crap so I can enjoy what I came to the location for.
Set up/ down is all the same every time but if I can make that less for a few bucks more, hell yeah. When I say a few bucks more I'm talking the life of it as I generally research my gear and keep for years.

I agree.. I actually camped less cause I dreaded the set up and fight of everything solo.. by the time I set up the camp site I'm exhausted and lost the excitement

    Yeah.
I get about 10 to 15 camping trips in over the year, mostly short weekend trips and one longer trip. I have a way to hoist mine up in the garage if I need to, but around here we may have a good weekend any time of the year (we camped over New Years Eve this past year).

I got into the RTT thing before all the hard shell quick-setup options were available and have had the traditional original soft shell for years now. I'd likely go the hardshell route with a side-opening tent like the iKamper mini if I was doing it all over again, but honestly, setup and takedown don't REALLY take that long -- 10 minutes, MAYBE 15 if I'm going super slow. Sure, that's an eternity compared to instant, but not really a big deal.

Almost every weekend June - September, about once a month in the rest of the months. I actually really enjoyed snow camping in the RTT

My 2.0 Mini was installed on Thursday afternoon, super happy with it! Losing my rear view mirror isn't as big of a deal as I thought it would be.

Popped her up and hosed it off today. I had no clue that was recommended for the canvas.

Still trying to learn the ladder, the whole top half step deal keeps throwing me off.

I can't speak on the Superlite, but I have a GFC V2 platform camper. Assuming they're using the same fabric on both tents (I don't see any reason they wouldn't), the gfc tent material is much thicker than any of the foldout RTT's i've seen. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend GFC based on my experiences with them.

Congrats! Love my mini. I haven’t taken the rain fly off yet. I should one night just to see the difference in ventilation

I'm sure this has been answered somewhere so please forgive my duplicate question. What do you typically do if the zipper on your cover gets hosed up? Smittybilt is backordered for 40 to 60 more days on replacement covers. I wonder if anyone has a work around that doesn't involve ratchet straps and duct tape.
