I had a 2017 tacoma then bought the 2017 tundra. Only put 12000km on the 17 taco before I got rid of it. I didn’t get to enjoy it at all. So when we sold the big camper we started in with the rtt and that’s when I decided to go back to the taco.

 

Hey all. Looking for some ideas for window repairs in an RTT I may pick up cheap. There is some dry rot on some of the widows and some cracks forming on the rest. My hope is to find some temporary repairs until I see whether or not I have to removed the window unit (screen and vinyl) and have them replaced. currently waiting on a response from the manufacturer on availability. I have thought about seeking a marine repair shop for estimates as well, but fear that will get pricey and perhaps as much as a new tent. This is a3-4 year old iKamper XCover 1.0 and appears to be in good shape aside from the windows. And I know the couple I'd be getting it from, so I know they took care of it. It has been in a garage and not opened in a while as they went to a camper.

I did find that Lamin-x makes some clear adhesive products up to 20 mm and 24" wide, but that's also north of $500 if memory serves correctly. I found this from searching for convertible roof window repairs. Also thought about clear flex tape for the smaller stuff and to hopefully use to reattach the dry rotted part of the window at the sewn on seam.

Any thoughts or references?

Your best bet is going to be what you've already done; contacting iKamper for guidance. Next best would be the marine upholstery, but who knows if you'd have to try and remove the tent from the frame to get it fixed, and what all that could entail.

 

I suspect that any repair involving replacement of the windows entirely will result in removing the fabric from the frame. Part of what is not so appealing about the prospects.

 

Yeah, it boils down to how much of your time and effort the savings on tent price are worth. I usually slant pretty heavily to valuing my time over the cost to replace something, because I'm not super handy and it'll take me 10 times as long to do something as someone more capable. Saving half the cost of the tent is great, unless it's going to take me 40 hours of work to get it usable. You're own skills will influence that valuation process.

 

I think the Lamin-x route I could handle. Aside from the lift on the truck, I've done most of the work myself. My wife thinks her sewing machine would do the work, but it's a small machine. The cost is my time to go and get it, so it's a good starting point. We'll see what iKamper has to say.

 

You an also see it ikamper makes a complete replacement for that model. I can upgrade my mini 2.0 to a mini 3.0 for $550.

 

Built a lift today to get the tent on and off the cap with ease.

 

been looking at building something like this for my set up but the math is throwing me off. Was thinking id use it for the rtt AND bed rack which is about ~300lbs. Do you know if something like what you build would hold such weight? Maybe someone here can point me to a website to see if my math can math

 

If you are worried about weight you could get a Gantry crane. Unless you will be yanking motors and hoisting heavy stuff in and out of your bed, go with the cheaper 2k model. Northern Tool link It extends to just under 12 feet which is plenty of room for you to pull under, lower a chain or electric hoist and pull your rack and tent. I'm saving up for a 4k gantry crane and electric hoist for my shop.

 

Right now I just slap a dolly on the back, strap it on, and then heave it down and move it around.

I've not solo-ed it going up, but coming down is easy enough.

 

I like that but it would be nice to have something i can break down as i wont be removing the RTT and rack often.

 

As a fellow rtt owner i just find it funny that people would rather build a wooden lift or buy a gantry crane rather than pound in some stakes for a ground tent

 

If I had the space I'd do a garage ceiling hoist like the post above mine.

Also I got the tent pretty cheap, otherwise I'd be in a hammock or cot tent over an RTT any day of the week

 

so i have this set up in my carport but after getting the lift and tires its now too low lol

 

well if I didn’t have a 7’ tall garage door I probably would have a crane system on my roof. My bars on my smart cap are damn neat 6’5” so that’s why we build outside lift systems.

 

Crank is good for 1000lbs
Pullies are 550lbs each
Cable is like 750 lbs
And not sure what a 4x4 is rated to, but ya should hoist a tent and rack no problem
