No i like the lift. I should’ve also included how people who mount a winch to their garage roof. Im just saying it’s funny the lengths we go to to avoid tent stakes and guy lines.

 

Oh, haha. Yup, wife says and I quote “camping on the ground is for peasants” now that’s she’s camped off ground.

 

Isn't that what camping is all about. Spending a small fortune to live like a homeless person?

I put on my XL RTT on top of my camper shell solo and that was fun lol. My uncle and I bought some materials to make a DIY receiver hitch mounted deer-hoist. We purposely made it a little taller/beefier than the store bought systems out there, 1, because he's stupidly tall, and 2, because it was to serve as my RTT hoist as well. Basically made this, but taller/stronger and it swivels to load deer in bed/position RTT over shell:

While it works, its still pretty sketchy. I found it easier to attach the hoist to another vehicle and then just drive under it with mine, instead of trying to swivel with that much weight. Its easier said than done, thats for sure.

 

Speaking of mounting roof top tents…
Just got mine on for the season, asked my girlfriend to help me carry it out and slide it up onto the yakima bars
Superlite for the win!

 

As a fellow RTT owner I just find it funny that people would buy a Tacoma to get around rather than ride a mountain bike, roller blade, or moon walk to get places.

 

Got the tent mounted way up top today. 12” higher then when I had it on my rack. Will take a bit to get used to.

 

What sleep mats/mattresses is everyone running in their RTT?

Ikamper skycamp mini. I'm looking into the lost horizon, which is like a exped knockoff.

FWIW - I'm not too concerned about being able to keep it in the tent, I don't mind packing it up separately.

 

I have the sky camp mini air mattress. Can get to collaps to 1/2”. Get an air pump that will inflate and deflate your mattress.
Also have an exped mega mat duo. That I can sell you.

 

I have the Go Fast Campers Puff Pad mattress that I got when I bought my Superlite. As a side sleeper it is a bit too thin and I usually have to add some air to support my hip.

I have heard good things about the Exped and Hest mattresses. Getting a piece of additional foam to supplant your existing mattress is a cheap option as well.

 

I've got the same tent, and all I've done is roll out a sleeping bag (old crappy one at that) and use a Rumpl to cover up.

I did just upgrade the bag when Motocampnerd had a sale on Big Agnes and it uses an additional pad, though I haven't been camping with it yet.

 

Tepui kukenam 3 - just the pad that comes with it, and a sleeping bag rolled out on that. Might put a sheet over it now that I think about it.

But for me it's comfortable enough and no add ons. Plus a dog, so inflatables are out of contention.

I have two couch cushions for my in cab setup.



Also have a lounge chair cushion which is great if I need to be more compact. After 3 nights you miss the couch cushions knowing they're an option

 

I have a smittybilt XL tent which has basically a king mattress size footprint. So I run 2x Nemo Roamer mattresses hooked together to make a queen size mattress for the wife and I. I put an indoor/outdoor carpet cut down to size on the floor to cover the bolt heads so I don't pop the mattresses. Amazing sleep, I debated between the nemo and the exped but the nemo was on sale when I was purchasing so I went with it. I have had probably 20 nights on it so far and they have been great.

Edit: I also have 3-4 blankets depending on weather. When its cold I usually have a heated blanket we sleep on top of then a pendleton blanket my wife had (cause its soft). We usually keep 2x fleece blankets for on top of the pendleton for when the temps come down. This all packs up into the tent because the mattresses can deflate down to practically nothing.

If it gets really cold I have 2x teton 0 degree sleeping bags that can zip together that we toss in the trailer.

 

If this is a 12V, I am curious on details. I have one that runs on mains for campgrounds, but curious if you have a 12V one set up. If you do, I would like to know more
