More space is always better. Nobody ever said "darn, I wish my tent was smaller." If you even think it might be too tight, it is. I'd skip the wedge.

I can't say much on above roof MPG as I avoided it, but with a mid height rack on both my Tundra and Tacoma I didn't see a change in MPG. I wouldn't expect the same results above the roof. I prefer the lower tent height for a shorter ladder as well.

I didn't have issues climbing the ladder when wet with rain, mud, or snow the few times I had to deal with it. However, I do not drink so any kind of buzz might have produced different results on the wet ladder.

I'm trying to find a way not too. I don't want to have to do bed stuffeners and another rack. Looking for a trailer to put it on.

i doubt you will need bed stiffeners tbh nobody did that on the rangers back when i had mine. its not like its a composite bed like the tacomas that are weak and will bend with weight up top.

It's aluminum with less reinforcement than older trucks. There's a thread on one of the forums or reddit (cant remember) where the owner was told not to put a cap on the truck due to potential damage. In short term ownership that's not a worry, but I'm hoping this is the last truck I have to buy.

i know its aluminum but people run with shells on them all the time around here for thousands of miles with no issues. its probably not a bad thing to add if you are truly bouncing stuff around a lot but i highly doubt it will be an issue in the long term of things if all you do is drive on the road and go to a campsite.

My road is a washboard mess. 2 miles of it every time the truck drives. It adds up.

Besides, I don't want to buy another bed rack. Rather shop a trailer.

i forget you live in the middle of nowhere lol. from the bits ive read on it unless you are running a gfc with a good amount of stuff loaded in it and bouncing offroad then you should be fine but its a cheap added insurance even thou it only helps in the rear of the bed.

true i didnt know if you had one of those universal ones or one set for a tacoma. what kind of trailer are you looking for?

Considering getting a canopy and mounting the ikamper mini to it. Any opinions on that? Obviously I'm going to have to research and get a strong canopy, I'm hoping something color matched would work like a Leer or Snugtop, ect.

At first I didn't like the idea of having it above the cab, due to looks/MPG's but the difference in MPG's I feel like will be minimal. Just looking for a little more space vs what I have now with my low billie bars & tonneau.

    Nice setup.

So I probably misunderstood what you said when you asked, but now I understand. My first tent was on a full height rack and was a sail that seemed to hold every bit if air it could get. My solution was a roof rack. The deflector pushed the wind up and over the tent and restored my mileage.

Seeing your set up, and if I understand it now, if you put a cap on I don't think it would substantially change you aerodynamics or affect your mileage terribly. I lost about 3 MPG's but I had a brick shaped tent. I think yours would be fine.

Thanks! The truck is a work in progress. I actually had an inferno before I got this one.

Thats interesting the roof rack restored your mileage, I had read somewhere that the prinsu rack actually made MPG's tank.

Lifting it will probably do the most damage to my MPG's I'd imagine.

Inferno. The best color out there IMO!!

Take a look and I'll tell ya what I've learned.
    20240416_131456 (1).jpg

2018 Sport MT. I now have a harbor freight rifle case over the passenger side with recovery gear and an iKamper Xcover on the rack. Depending on how aggressive I am on the peddle, 17-18.5 running 60-65 on my 45 mile commute. Freeway speeds, don't look, just expect not good and fill it up.

    What's affected my mileage?
    Chin strap removal- no change.
    Lift - no change
    Winch and bumper, nope.
Full height rack with a Tepui Kukenam 2, lost about 3 mpg.
Added a roof rack with the same tent on and restored gas mileage.
Mid-height rack and tent, no change.
    Toolbox and traction mats, nope.

Tires and wheels. Absolutely affected mileage. Stock wheels with Dueler Revo 3's stayed close to factory. Current setup is American Racing Bahas 17x9 with kevlar KO2's. Lost 2-3 mpgs. The tires are wide and heavy, about 9 pounds heavier per wheel/tire over stock and two inches wider. But absolute hell raisers on trails. My open diff with this set up has out performed some fully locked trucks, but thats a different story. I used to have two sets of mounted tires, Duelers for the road and KO2's for trails. Verified the gas mileage differences when ever I switched. Got tired of changing them out and just kept the Ko2s.

What affects your mileage is aerodynamic changes and resistance (like a head wind), rolling resistance, and weight. At least that's been my experience with this truck. Set up as it is I can still get 18.5 on my commute, but average about 17.

My bottom line is this. We don't buy trucks if we're concerned about gas mileage because we're basically driving a brick. Unless its a Cyber truck which doesn't really qualify anyway. Set it up, enjoy it, use it as it's intended to be used. Have fun.

Losing my inferno wasn't by choice. Got into an accident and rolled it going 65-70mph. Thankfully my husband and I walked away pretty much unscathed, hence why I bought another one.

I commute 36 miles a day, mostly highway (65-70mph) as well. Right now as it sits I'm averaging 22mpg.

Since your commute is so long, how many miles you got racked up? I'l have had my truck 2 years in December and its at 23k right now.

Tires I'm looking at are 50lbs (Kumho AT52's) so I might need to consider something different as I don't do much off roading (and when I do its FS roads).

P.S - Sorry RTT troops for the BS

    Yeah.
This thread is WITH the BS.

If I didn't do rocky trails and Colorado passes, I would not be running E-rated tires. I just don't want to have to deal with a torn sidewall on a shelf road. But even C-rated tires are better than what come on these trucks. Some FS roads can be pretty rough, but for the most part, C-rated should be fine for most people.

Thanks for the input! I'm still learning all about tires. We've had the E rated Kumhos on our F150 and liked them a lot, but it does different stuff than my Tacoma. ie I'm not towing a trailer.

I will look into C rated. Ice/snow traction is important to me, but with my 36mi commute I also don't want to lose too much longevity, from my understanding "winter" tires can be softer?

The tires that are on the truck have served me well so far. Goodyear Wrangler Territory. I have sema 17's sitting in the garage waiting to be wrapped, just doing the financially responsible thing and waiting to put some more miles on stock before I swap.

I have 135k+ on it now. But I have had a commuter car (VW Passat TDI, 45 mpg+) for two years and put 21k on that. So the truck would have had 155k-ish on without the commuter.

Tires. I would get what you want that suits what you want to do. One of the trails I blew a sidewall on is a fire road with a no bypass obstacle. I blew out the sidewall shortly after clearing it. The other was a tree root that snapped. I told someone else, build what you need to do what you want. I wouldn't be happy with mine if I'd built it to favor commuting.

PM me if you want. I don't want to derail the page either.

Look at the BFG Duelers. I've had them in all conditions on and off road and absolutely loved them. They were in snow here in VA a few times and MI once and did well. And for an A/T they are pretty quiet with a semi closed side wall.
