gears can definitely help. They won't make a night and day difference in fuel economy but lower gears will mean less load on the motor to keep things moving and that means less fuel used.

 

I gained about .5 mpg going up to 4.10s

 

Actually, our family owns a cabin on Tamarack. We go every year christmas-new year and some times 4th of July.

 

Interesting, and agree driving style is a big factor. Been wondering how much rise in a bed rack to keep the RTT level with the roofline?

 

I fabricated my first rack to sit the bottom of the tent even with the roofline; leaving most of the bulk exposed above the cab. Not good.

Truck felt super tippy, got blown around like nothing in high winds (to the point of having to stop driving in gale force winds during a trip across North Dakota..)

And mileage absolutely sucked.

Now that I fabbed my new rack to sit the top of the tent just below the roofline, it's worlds better. Like no comparison. Never felt as though my stability was compromised all throughout Moab.

 

Mine sits half way between my back window..the top is level with roof when folded up

 

Well this isn't good. Got a HEAVY rain last night. Woke up at the bar that holds up the awning section over where the annex would be was bent into a V. I tried to straighten it out but you can see how that went. Anyone have ideas to repair it? And how to keep water from collecting there so this doesn't happen again

 

Gotta keep it tight with the rope. Go to Lowes buy 1/2" conduit and a 30$ bender. I'll do it

 

Is that what caused it? Not running the ropes down tight? I'll head to Lowes when this rain let's up

 

Measure the plastic holes tho before you buy the conduit. I guessed 1/2"

 

That's what I'm guessing to, but yeah, I'll measure
