Ok here's a situation I want to throw out there for speculation...

Let's say you have an RTT mounted on your vehicle, and you drive to a bar and get completely hammered. Let's say you would normally take a cab home, leave your truck at the bar, and pick it up the next morning. Instead, you just unfold the tent cot right in the parking lot and sleep it off. Wake up the following morning and fold it up and drive home.

What are all the aspects that might make this illegal?

- Does this get considered as sleeping in your car? Some states can give you a DUI if you sleep drunk in your car and the keys are in the car with you.

- How many bar owners/properties would care if you slept out there? I would think it would be an insurance liability?

- Any other aspects, or generally would this be an OK idea?

Curious to hear what law enforcement members have to say about this one, because I have seriously considered it.

 

I've known people to set up their tents in a Wal Mart parking lot instead of using a hotel haha

No, but there are eighty other violations you could be cited for. This question is a big old fat can of worms... I see it jacking the next 10 pages of the thread.

Well, when I got arrested while sleeping off my stupor I was cited for some silly citation like "having no purpose in public" blah blah blah. It was a $100 fine. The LEO was being cool with me not driving, and I didn't give him any lip, but he couldn't leave me there so off to the drunk tank I went. I can't imagine the creative stuff he could have come up with if I had lipped off or acted like a dick.

 

Somebody just go try it and report back on the things you get ticketed for. That will save everyone in this thread days of BS.

 

I just did. But yes, not a good question for this thread. Maybe better suited off in it's own thread? I'm sure plenty of our TW LEOs will gladly explain the plethora of laws in each of their respective jurisdictions.

I stopped & parked in several retail locations to take a snooze overnight with my RTT on he way back from Moab. Did not have a single issue.
I made sure to check if there were any "No Overnight Parking" signs though.

true - I don't drink so that was not a factor.

 

Im hoping tigerfan will show up, he's from my state so it'll be nice what he says about that, but this summer when I'm on my trip to the Oz-land, i will not be sleeping in hotels so I'm curious how this'll fold out.
