I'd like to know this as well. How much weight can our shells hold? Between the weight of the rack, the tent, and two people, it makes me nervous about all that weight on a fiberglass shell.

I used my RTT on a snugtop for over a year on a variety of shells with no problem. When the tent is the only thing up there I have about 150lbs in tent and 40lbs in rack. This is well within the weight capacity of the shell.

When you stop and camp, it is a static load, plus, a good portion of the load is supported by the ladder. There are plenty of people that do it (myself, homertaco, xoverland, mountain state overland to name a few) that don't have any issues.

So it can hold the weight of 2 people, the rack, and tent? Even with some of the weight being displaced to the ladder, that makes me nervous. I heard there are shells that are "reinforced" to hold heavier loads.

I put my tent on my snugtop and its about 170-180lbs with no problem. If you are that nervous about it either get a Prinsu rack and put it on your cab or sleep with your head by the ladder so that the ladder is taking the most weight and not your canopy. Also you can add more cross bars to distribute the weight more if you'd like.

I have been doing it for a while now. Still no issues.

I have 4 Yakima cross bars to distribute the weight.

Does anybody with an ALL PRO rack have their tent mounted like mine? It's definitely not centered on the rack, and about half hangs over the one side. I wanted to mount it as close to the cab as possible, but am a bit worried with it being so off center. ANybody else do this or have a solution aside from moving it back to the rear two tubes?

Change the orientation of the rails. You can mount the, either front to back or side to side. Mount them side to side so you can center the tent.

I have an allpro rack.mine is placed toward the front to allow room at the rear of the truck. It's not an issue. The rack has a full plate that runs the length of the bed. It distributes weight evenly.

I ran it with my snug top without issue, however more crossbars would have been better to help distribute the weight. That or a prinsu rack like over my cab.

To be honest having both, the pack rat rack is far sturdier than the snug top. Just my two cents. I don't worry about the fiberglass cracking from fatigue or my cap getting ruined anymore. And if I feel like it I still have the option to run it.

Also when I ran the cap I had the tent open over the tailgate so that the weight was evenly distributed over the Yakima q towers not just over one side.

How did you have yours running with the all pro rack? Most of the tent is distributed to one side, however it's not center. That's what I'm worried about. I could take it off and do it over again, but that's a pain, since I mounted the entire thing myself the first time. I thought about maybe making some sort of crossbar? Or, maybe it's ok just as it is. I'm just a big dude at 230, and don't want to ruin it.

On the flip side, I'm pretty happy with Tepui. Overall the tent came ok. There is one seam that the sewing is complete crap and frayed, and a cut in the fabric at the same place. And, the top buckle that I guess buckles the ladder down was broken. I guess I expected the ruggedized tent to be bulletproof, but I'' email them and see what they say. So far, it's ok I suppose.

Having just picked up a new shell myself I got the low down on current practices for LEER and Snugtop. Can't speak for ARE. Snugtop has been doing a reinforced honey comb top on all thier models for some time. This helps the roof support more weight. LEER has started doing this on most models as well. My base model 100R that I just got has the thicker roof. LEER and Snutop both have a contractor model that has reinforced sides. The LEER 100rcc (upgrade from mine) and the Snugpro. Both of these have reinforcement in the sides but it isn't really aimed at making the load capacity on these shells more. It actually is reinforced to support the weight of the side tool boxes that often are added to these shells.

Yes that reinforcement helps with the total strength of the shell as a unit but not enough to justify a big jump in weight capacity that the roof can hold. Especially if the roof rack is mounted closer to the center of the shell vs out on the edges. The guy told me that he wouldn't hesitate to put 400lbs on any of the shells that they sell. They base the rating of the shell on the rating of the rack so you are almost always told a 150lb rating because that's what THULE and Yakima rate their crossbars for and as most people know that is a very conservative estimate.

Get a good rack that disperses the weight evenly. Put your tent up there and enjoy it. As long as you don't get in the tent start jumping up and down you will be fine. Like mentioned before, sleep with your torso over the cantilevered part of the tent so less weight is on the other end.

I'm officially tent-less. Just sold my Kukenam XL to a guy from Expedition Portal.

I've got a new Ruggedized XL and Ruggedized Autana on their way in a couple weeks. Just in time for a trip.

Thanks man! I've had 4 tacomas, and this is my second single cab. There is just something about them… hands down my favorite vehicle ever. And I've had over 20 vehicles lol.
