ARE Z Series shell, FrontRunner rack and Tepui Autuana... zero issues.
ARE Z Series shell, FrontRunner rack and Tepui Autuana... zero issues, very stable. Like @velillen says, keep in mind ststic vs dynamic weight. ARE rep told me their shells will hold over 600lbs in tests, but statically (sitting still), not while moving.

Sorry to be a bummer on this but i cracked my topper first trip out with the RTT. I have a non reinforced snugtop. Also Yakima bars for me have sagged a lot with my CVT Mt Rainier on it. They worked but i would run at least three bars if i was to ever go that rout again. I now have mine on a trailer.

Ran my tepui Autana and Eezi Awn 1600 on both a Snugtop XV and a Leer 100R with a Prinsu rack. No problems whatsoever after numerous trips and some pretty rough roads.

I think it was about $200-300 more when I ordered mine. I originally was going to do the 100RCC but when I went to the dealer he said the only reason the RCC is considered reinforced more is due to the sides. The roof structure between the two is the same but the sides on the RCC are reinforced more because usually people install the side access tool boxes which need reinforcement to support the weight they carry.

He said if I was concerned about weight on the roof then either will work. Obviously the RCC will be a little stronger all around because of the reinforced sides, but if the weight of the tent were to crack the roof it wouldn't matter if the shell were an RCC or R.

I haven't confirmed this with Leer so it could be something mostly made up. It sounded pretty logical to me though and from what I have seen between shells it makes sense. I think the many dealers and manufacturers put a very conservative rating on these caps and although they aren't indestructible, they can take a lot more than they are used for, especially with a good rack that spreads out the load to multiple points rather than just the single points of the thule/yakima load bars.

I'm looking to buy used. The Rebel is just a common find on Craigslist for me. But I agree, 2k is a lot to spend on something that won't do what I want.
Yeah, I plan on Prinsu as my means of rack, definitely my favorite option.
Yep, I'm keeping the weight rule in mind, thanks. I have yet to come across a ARE used near me, but I wouldn't rule them out by a long shot.

I wish NJ laws weren't so strick about trailer registration, it seems our RTT on a trailer would be much better for us. The gf and myself usually like to adventure around if we are camping for a couple days. It would be nice to not have to pack up the tent anytime we want to leave our camp. It's not a deal breaker though, but hopefully a trailer is in the near future.

That is exactly why we went the trailer rout. leave camp set up and explore.

That's definitely the biggest drawback to the RTT's - having to set up/take down before you can move. I don't generally spend more than one night in any given spot so I'd be packing up anyway, just rough sometimes to get packed up before the morning photography session is half over.

I would say that's the only drawback so far, we just camped on the beach in Maryland over the weekend and the wind was insane, but sure enough the tent kept secure.

Haha. You're a long bed in silver? Or are you referring to the canopy above the rack? I'm over here in SoCal.

wind can be tricky....my tent tried to eat me like a venus fly trap the first summer I had it. The wind was really bad and it picked up the cantilevered side while I was in it! I've learned to park facing away from the wind plus having the RTT actually on the roof and not over the bed limits the amount of air flow under the tent. A ratchet strap from the tent to your wheel can help too.

I just picked up a O2 cool 10" fan that operates on disposable batteries. It worked well. There are stronger fans if you want to run 12v.

Yeah, I want to make a screen for the front slider of the cap and run a fan to draw air in there and push it out the sides. We aren't planning to sleep in there much, but there may be the odd time, or for kids. Or just to keep stuff back there cooler.
