This may have been answered before, but I can't seem to find it via forum or Google search:

Opinions on Tepui Ayer vs. Kukenam...

Does that 8 inches of width and 12 inches of length on the Kukenam sleeping area seem significantly bigger than the smaller Ayer?

    Pretty significant price difference....

I'm looking to enter the world of RTT and would likely be using it for me + a 45lb dog or my wife and I.

Both seem pretty tight for 2 people, so I'm not seeing the advantage of the extra money spent on the Kukenam.

Also, would likely get a 3 man RTT later down if we end up really enjoying it.

So it seems I'm leaning towards the Ayer.

    Thoughts?

How cozy do you like to be? Do you need room for any extra gear inside the tent? The Ayer will comfortably sleep 2 but not much more room than that. The Kukenam/Autana will sleep 2 and still have room left over for some gear or a third person if necessary.

I personally would eat the extra cost to have extra space. I'd rather have too much of something than not enough. Who knows what you'll end up using the space for in the future?

I would too, but do you have a long bed? The 72" tents will hang a foot over on the short beds.... if that bothers you at all.

Ahh. nope sure dont. My philosophy has always been form follows function. Im trying to imagine what that'd even look like.

    Too many to list now.

Here's my rack for a mckinley, more than a foot overhang. Same story, different tent.

There's a guy on here who posted a picture - about a month ago - of a 72" tent inch on a short bed. Maybe even in this thread. As you would imagine, it hangs over the rear of the truck by almost a foot. Certainly don't think it would hurt anything though, and I'm sure the extra space inside the tent would be pretty nice.

That said, I'm still going 56". Probably Kukenam. At most it will have to house my wife, 5 yr old daughter, and myself. Probably be tight. During my solo trips it would be more than plenty.

I keep my Grizzly 2-person +25-degree Canvas Sleeping Bag in our Tepui RTT. It fits perfectly and still have room for another. I believe 2 of these would fit with no problems.

Mine hangs over by a foot with no problems. In fact I like it, gives me a little extra shade over the tailgate when I'm sitting on it and the extra space inside the RTT is definitely worth the price....
