Thanks for the info. Would it be too much trouble to ask you if you can take pics of the rack please? Really want to see how you did it so that I can get an idea of what needs to be done. Thanks again.

Good points here! I'm planning on using 0.083" wall tube which is pretty light. I'm using that many crossbars for overall rigidity as well as flexibility for other uses down the road (i.e. snowboards, bikes, pelican cases, etc.).

Would you suggest thicker wall tubing than 0.083"?

No offense taken! I did think about using HREW tubing, but I'm treading the edge of my and my roommate's skills and tools with this rack as-is (and I want to tackle this project so I can say I did!), so I don't want to complicate things too much by adding the need for a pipe bender and/or notcher...

Love it! That's essentially how I hope mine turns out. What thickness material did you go with?

That's why you should head up to Bellingham!

    I've got all that!

Heading to the Bering Sea on Sunday, though.

I'd advise you to use .125

Hey man, welcome to the thread. Good to hear there are more options now. Does my old telescoping ladder have any trade-in value towards one of those newer/better versions? :D

    FALSE.

Not all tents are made in China. The CVT and Tepui tents in the current group buys are, but there are lots of tents made in South Africa, Australia and even some US made ones now.

This makes me chuckle. You start out talking about saving weight with less cross pieces and then recommend Sch40 pipe for the rack? a Sch40 rack could easily be MUCH heavier than one made from sq tube.

Round tube will work and some definitely prefer the look of round tube. That's cool. Build it the way you want, but as someone who build racks from sq tube, I find it much nicer to have a flat surface to mount to with greater surface area for the things that are mounted to it. With round tube, you only have a very small surface area at the top of the tube as a contact point. Not a huge deal, but having had both kinds or racks I prefer the sq tube on something like a bedrack or roofrack (at least for the rack part itself). The legs can be whatever you want.

Depends on your goals for weight. If you plan to carry a lot of extra stuff and a heavy rear bumper etc, it might be worth your while to go lighter on the bedrack if you want to keep weight down. But my opinion is its better to overbuild than underbuild and have something fail on you in the middle of nowhere. So if it were me I'd go with 0.125" or 1/8" wall. I also recommend something a little bigger for the legs since the legs really supporting it all more than the rack itself. Not necessarily thicker wall (although that isn't bad) but I don't think 1" sq tube is adequate for the legs. I'm using 1x2" tube (1/8" wall) for the legs on the racks I'm building.

That's just my opinion on it. There are lots of good racks out there that people have built that may not follow that.

I believe mine is 1/8 - plenty sturdy

Probably summertime. Although, there are some discussions going on with another fabricator to possibly take over the construction of the racks for me which could make them available much sooner if the details can get worked out and I'm feeling good about the quality etc.

I also disagree. Cheapest is not best just as most expensive I'd not always best. Different companies in the US that buy from china are different. We take a lot of pride in setting ourselves apart by giving more quality , you can see this even from photos and compare. Yes most tents are made in china as a lot of Australian tents are also. Ones that are made in Australia are much more expensive. Making a tent such as these in America are going to be the price range of the Australian tents. Also to set the record straight there are more than 3 factories in china. There are over 20. They do not have a stock pile of these on one place waiting to badge them. I do not mind people saying things about china or other companies. I just like the record to be straight about what it really is and not about what we think it is.
    Best regards,

    Bobby

All of the changes we do. The tent itself has been around awhile. We are designing in the process for our new tents we will be making
