Honestly I don't think you will lose that much MPG mounting RTT to the truck vs. towing a trailer...I have mine mounted via bed bars and hardly see MPG loss. I just think towing a trailer constantly you would have a higher chance of seeing MPG loss.

the bestop bed bars would put it up above the cab catching all the wind though. be about the same as mounting on the roof I guess.

I hardly notice my tent up on the roof, maybe -1mpg unless I'm driving into the wind on the highway

You could also get a roof rack with a wind fairing to deflect some of it, like the prinsu or something

I was worried about wind so I have mine mounted low. I don't notice any loss in mpg, and unless there's a super strong cross wind I don't even realize it's back there.

Just want to shout out to @Cascadia Tents, I hit a decent sized branch with my tent ladder last night while driving and the cover and ladder are in good shape! Lucky me. I have bad luck with trees.

I didn't really see any loss in mpg's when I put the tent on. I actually saw a more dramatic loss from putting a roof rack on.

Since im the first bestop over rack that eddy has built back in 2014, i feel obligated to comment

The build quality/welds are very good so no worries there.

As far as MPG, i dont think you'll lose that much.. bear in mind im armored front/rear with 33's and i still can manage 16mpg around back roads/towns..

When i hit the highway i have a lead foot and i still can pull 13mpg if i try.

You know where the "gun range" out off the road is? Where the fence is down? There is a tree above it that is apparently 8' off the ground. I am 8'1" lol

hey guess not sure if this has been mentioned but I saw a lot of guys still using the rectangular shaped brackets that come with our rtt on their bed bars. @dcsbtaco and I didn't like that idea so we bought the exhaust clamps to go there. We are not the first people to do this but I can remember who did it and if some of you guys knew about this cheap and good looking mod?

I bought a stubby antenna for Runner but I haven't put it on because the stock antenna is like my "feeler" - if it hits something I know the tent is going to get whacked too. A little early warning system there...

How long have you had your tent mounted like that? Is the corner with the lock solidly mounted to the bar? If not, it seems pretty risky to really only have 3 solid attachment points.

    Thanks for the info.
yeah, I've got Eddy's bolt on sliders on my truck...quality work! besides an aftermarket front skid, its all the armor I have.
Mostly I would be running down the beach..75 mph limit so I usually run about 80...

Itll probably be like a kite on the back... I haven't got my tent yet but I can't see myself going 80 with a RTT on the back... My bed rack is 19 inches from the bed rail to the top of the cross bar so another 15.5 inches off that is where the tent will sit....

Plus my truck doesn't like to go over 70 with the 2.7...
