my RTT sticks out about 1-2" above the cab. i had a friend make a bed rack that was 8" above the truck bed. if i drive like a grandma i can squeeze out 20mpg. with normal driving im getting about 18mpg.

Curious what brand most people's are using for canopies with rtt.

Seems like most only say they support 150

Had mine on a snugtop XTR and held it great. If you are worried about weight capacity you can add more cross bars to distribute the weight more evenly

So it's not the roof that is the problem it is the crossbars ?

It is the roof, but instead of just having 2 cross bars that put all the weight on the front and back of the canopy, add 1 or 2 cross bars in the middle to distribute the weight more evenly across the roof.

Most cap manufacturers set a low weight limit so they don't have to worry about someone breaking it and having to cover it under warranty. I have never seen of or heard of a cap breaking or cracking from a roof top tent. I have used mine on a LEER 100R and Sungtop XV, both standard non reinforced models with no issues. I also have plenty of customers that do it and haven't heard any issues from them either.

with 2x adults? I know once it is opened up and 2 people are up there weight disperses to the ladder as well.

I was always under the impression the load rating was for dynamic rather than static loads.

Google - "truck canopy load ratings static vs dynamic"

From a source near and dear to TW fans
    http://tepuitents.com/pages/faq

Is My Rack System Strong Enough for a Tepui?
When looking into whether your rack system is strong enough to hold a tent and it's occupants, be sure to pay close attention to theDynamic Load Capacity vs. Static Load Capacity. The dynamic load cap. simply means that you don't want that much weight on any particular point in the rack system while the vehicle is MOVING. But, since the weight of the tent, and subsequently it's occupants, is distributed evenly throughout the rack system while the car is stationary we can say that the static load cap. is much higher. Always check with your rack manufacturer, though, for specific load limits and capacities before mounting anything.

I built mine out of 1-1/2" x .090 wall HREW tubing - plenty strong enough for my purposes

Do what you feel comfortable doing... I've always had mine on two 'tubes', my design pretty much necessitates two... properly spaced of course

They are trip wires connected to early warning sensors, designed to let you know when someone has infiltrated your tent...possibly taking an unauthorized nap. :D

This but also they can just pull in the side panels so when you fold the tent up you don't have a ton of extra stuff hanging out.

I'm going to ask because you seem rather knowledgeable,
I found a Raven canopy on craigslist, but am having a very difficult time finding out any information. seems Glasstite use to produce them, and they are not around any more.

this is the canopy in question.
rack mounting looks stout... but like I said, i can't find anything on this brand

It's to keep the sides pulled in to make storing / folding it up easier.
