I don't think it would fit in stock mattress cover, but honestly didn't try to find out. We sewed our own sheet for the tent (took two goodwill sheets and sewed them together to make a large pillow case which then slips over both the stock mattress and the memory foam topper). Never had a problem with it flipping. Sometimes you have to encourage it if it gets caught on the roof, but the regular mattress sometimes did that when the velcro straps failed.

As to extra at the bottom. Go for it. I didn't see a need since I wouldn't be sleeping there and the stock mattress already provides enough cushion for sitting and getting in and out. The cost of getting a King for that purpose was not worth it to me, personally.

    Well done, sir.

Are we talking mattress covers or the tent cover?

    Fair point.
Mattress cover - don't know, but doubt it. I made sheets.
Tent cover - yes, will fit with no problem. I even keep pillows and blankets and it still shuts and zips.

I don't think they've ever worked for me.

I think I might just get 2 'full' size pads, and then cut them down to fit as two even squares. A split in the middle should mean an easy fold.

    Thanks for the advice.

Pretty sure you just helped me decide on a height. I hadn't even thought of Plano boxes or crawling under it, but a Plano box with a padlock is big enough that it's not coming out (easily) with the tailgate locked.

You think there's enough room up front to get the lid open on a toolbox ?

Anyone else have issues with the cover leaking on the top? Just unzipped my smitty for the first time this winter and was water on the top by the ladder. None really around the sides

no. never had the cover leak. I've had some issues getting the tent completely dry after a wet weather outing. opened it up later to find it wet around the base even after setting it up to dry in the garage.

Yeah, with a locked tailgate, you're not going to be able to walk off with much. Not sure about a toolbox. I'm guessing you'd be able to crack it open, maybe halfway... maybe less. Enough to reach in and grab something small but I wouldn't expect to open it fully.

I just had to go through that for the first time myself, and I found that water gets everywhere. Even in a garage with a torpedo heater, I had to actively dry off a lot of hidden spots with a towel.

You will find this happens from condensation. Cold days and a sunny day will cause this. Especially if it has been snowing and warmed up.

Awesome thanks, figured it must have been something to do with the cold we usually don't get here. Will keep an eye on it more in the future

Nice work @stronghammer and thanks for all of the pics! Is this the Gray Mt Shasta Ext Summit Stargazer? If so, I've got the same one (waiting to be mounted) in my garage and it is incredibly stout/heavy. No way I'd be able to mount that beast on my own. Enjoy it!

What's the general consensus on 2 or 3 bars? At what size tent does one need to think about adding a 3rd bed bar?

Kb voodoo mid height rack and 8" relentless fab 3 bar setup both keep the tent pretty much inline with the Cab height. And access to the underbelly to store your gear. Just right. Won't go wrong with either I imagine

Exped Mega Mat Dual is epic. It's perfect sized but needs inflating..but keep pillows and sleeping bags in the tent no problem.
