No worries! If you do decide on a Tepui, REI offers free shipping/store pick up and money back for members. Pretty cool... Tepui has some awesome customer service too!

Okay friends, I bought the Yakima skyrise 2 and took it out to the Oregon/Washington coast. After my trip, I returned it to REI. First, their was a manufacturing defect with the ladder that caused the under belly of the tent to dent prematurely. Second, the poles used to keep vents open were falling apart. REI had a great return policy and they agreed with me concerning the manufacture defects. I'm still going with REI for the ability to return items I do not like and as such, I will be purchasing the Tepui Ayer sky 2 in the coming weeks. Anyone seen or try out the Ayer sky 2??? Anyways, stay tuned.... on a side note, I did like the Yakima slimshady awning. No complaints as I have a yakima rack up front and attaches quite nicely. I highly recommend it.

Glad you were able to return it, that thing looks like junk!

I think you will be very satisfied with the Tepui (I'm a CVT owner, but I think they're on par).

Anybody replaced a travel cover for an ARB Simpson III with a CVT or Tepui cover of equivalent size? I need to replace the cover on my ARB, but I want to get a black cover and ARB doesnt make one.

Anybody replaced their CVT/Tepui tent cover and can confirm the replacement travel covers come with new zippers and tracks for the cover and the ribbon that threads into the tent base?

    I'll keep that in mind!
Those tents are pretty pricey though...as much as I'd love to have one, I'm not too sure about spending that kind of money on an RTT. Tepui's reputation definitely precedes them. If I end up pulling the trigger on an RTT, I'll more than likely buy one of their models. Possibly the Green Kukenam Sky.

Went with the Smitty Overlander. So far, I'm pretty impressed with the quality and durability of this tent.

It's definitely not cheap but quality is top notch. At least you know you rockin' one of the best and sleeping in something sound. It's definitely elevates your camping experience to a whole new level.

I expect we'll hear more of these types of stories. I think the standards of overlanders are higher quality and durability than the typical weekend KOA camper and the Skyrise just doesn't quite meet those standards IMO. I have no doubt you'll be happier with the Tepui.

What is this Ayer Sky2 that you speak of? As the Tepui Rep that's news to me. Is that something the guys at REI told you? Were they talking about the Baja Series Tepui tents? The Baja series are the "Ultralight" versions of each of the Tepui tents. The Baja Series Ayer can be ordered with either a full mesh canopy or a nylon "ultralight" canopy which would be more similar to the material on the Yakima.

Tepui replacement covers come with new zippers. I can't confirm that they fit the Simpson 3 though. The ARB uses the bulky sliding ladder, where the Tepui uses the slightly lower profile telescoping ladder so the Tepui covers don't have the large raised section in the middle of the cover for the ladder. Might be a tight fit.

Ok, thanks for your reply. That's good info to know. The ARB covers don't have the raised portion in the middle either, but ill keep that in mind. The cover was always a pretty tight fit/annoying to begin with.

Looks like REI advertises it as Ayer sky 2. Definitely not Baja.

Tepui advertises it as Ayer sky. Looks to be the same tent. And it's cheaper than the Yakima!

Ive gone mine mounted on my thule racks on top of the canopy and honestly never noticed any difference performance wise of the truck where a deflector would help.

I would kind o flike one for branches to sort of "help" them go over the top of it

I know there is the ongoing debate of whether or not a standard topper can handle the weight of a RTT both while moving and with people up top... I researched it on Tacomaworld, Expedition Portal and other forums. I really want to mount my Smittybilt RTT (~140lbs with blankets, rainfly, etc) over my ARE Z series shell. You often see people doing this and it seems to work fine. I would like to not make an internal cage and I'm leaning towards just making a custom rack with 4 cross bars (no factory mounting tracks) but I'm hesitant. Does anyone have experience with this or a similar setup??

I would like to see a few more examples of this working out for people. My truck sees everything from washboard roads to mild rock crawling so it will get bounced around a decent amount. Also the tent may see up to 400 lbs with people and gear when parked.

What I've been using as a reference to justify this being ok is the fact that I currently have a heavy homemade cargo basket, spare tire, trail jack, shovel and ax mounted over the topper with only 4 mounting points (equivalent to 2 crossbars and appx 150lbs). I've been running this setup for almost a year over various terrain and the topper shows no visible signs of cracking or excessive wear.
