I built this one myself along with the rack... thinking of mounting on a trailer but will likely keep it simple for starters. What do you guys pay in registration fees on a trailer like that?

Very wet out there. Deff wouldn't want to be on a ground tent right now.

Do they make lightning rods for these tents? . 1/4 mile strike sounded like a sonic boom.

Does anyone have thoughts on the Tepui Ayer / Kukenam series?

After seeing several people with RTTS at the Flyin Brian DH race in Brian Head this weekend, I am pretty sold on the RTT concept, but nearly 2K for a tent and bed rack is pretty hard to swallow for casual use. I figure the Ayer seems plenty rugged for my needs and uses, and leaves me some extra $ for a bed rack.

Any other "budget-ish" brands/models I should investigate?

 

The Ayer is a great little tent especially if you are usually camping solo. Works for two people just fine, but is nice as a solo tent with room to have gear inside with you if you want it.

How do the zippers that attach the different "shell" options hold up to truly wet weather? It seems like that is a potential large point of failure right next to an absorbent mattress. We got soaked at Brian Head is why I ask.

Also, it looks like the Ayer Sky is sold out everywhere. Is there a TBD on the next batch? Gonna start saving my pennies...

 

Nice setup! I am looking at doing something like this. I have a couple questions if you don't mind.
Where did you get the awning that is off the back?
What tent is that and what kind of rack is it mounted to?
And last but not least is that a Leer topper? If so do you have the 6 foot bed?

In testing, the new "zipper-gimp" hasn't been an issue with wet weather. The zipper is covered so its not exposed directly to the elements. There are shipments of new stuff arriving now through the end of the month. Most out of stock items should be available again in the next couple weeks. I can also take orders to be placed on the backorder list and we'll ship one as soon as it becomes available.

 

Looking for light recommendations for inside the tent. Led? Waterproof? Wire it to the truck or use a USB battery pack.

 

Eno makes a string of LED lights that are an easy solution if you are hesitant to hardwire. Just look on Amazon for eno lights

 

Ya I mean I'm very good at wiring and I have no problem doing either. Seeing if anyone had certain pros and cons for lights in the tent and powering them. Unless you all just sit in the dark with

The awning is a King Camp Compass that I purchased off E-bay. I absolutely love it. My tent is a Freespirit Recreation Adventure 55 tent. I am extremely happy with this as well. The tent is attached to Yakima bars which are attached to a Leer 100R fiberglass cap. My truck is a shortbed. 5 footer. Hope this helps ya.
