Want to know if anyone has built a bed rack for a 4-5 man roof top tent? I have a 2015 double cab with the 5ft bed. The tent I'm looking at purchasing is 79x48 collapsed. Just wondering if anyone has built something for this set up or if I'm on my own. Thanks

    79" on a 60" bed?

Might want to look into having your roof and bed rack to be level or one piece (much better option)!

I have the hellwig overload springs and the reason for the size of the tent is for my family to come on fishing trip I take at the South and North core banks of North Carolina. Alot of beach trips, I was planning on building the rack about 18 inches over the cab and about 6 inches over the tailgate. I thought about the roof rack option and getting a bed rack to match level, but wasn't sure how that would work when the cab and bed flex off-road on the beaches. Do the tents flex well while in the collapsed position? Of so that is the route I will take, but if they don't I figured one bed rack some over the cab would be a better route and didn't know if anyone out there had done this? Thanks for the help also..

A rack that mounts IN the bed (not the rails) that is a single unit thatvextentds over the roof would be ideal. Let the bed itself take the weight not the bed sides.

The flex factor might/could be in issue on a dual rack setup but maybe you could have wing nuts on just the front or rear to loosen right before you hit the trails????

@fatfurious2 just mounted his dual rack but might not have tried it out yet.

“Dual racks” won’t work for your situation since the bed and cab need to move/flex independently of each other. I have “dual racks” and need to be careful having something bridging between the two. I’ve wheeled with a kayak on the racks and it worked because the kayak had some flex in it.

You’ll probably need a ladder rack that attaches to the bed only but hangs over the cab. This’ll support that big ass tent and allow it to move with the bed and not be tied into the cab.

Obviously you’ll want the ladder rack flat and without the sides...

A fab shop could build you a custom rack that will support your tent. That's what I did. I wanted a rack that fit my personal and work needs.image.jpg

I would think the weight sitting in the bed rather than on the rails would work much better also???

Definitely invest in some bed stiffeners also I would think.

Well, the RTT will raise the center point of gravity and it becomes a whole new driving experience. But at the end of the day it's just the nature of the beast. If you put that much weight up top, it WILL change behavior.

    26510777_10102826758914524_1226338418_o_538d2b2d8612714d0e438566672c951a7beb1584.jpg

I gladly admit: After first mounting it, it was borderline sketchy since I usually drive it like I stole it. You need to adjust your driving style for that...

I'm sure this was brought up somewhere in this thread but 758 pages is to many to review.
I'm getting suspension and cannot decide which leaf to get.
Ppl say AAL is noisy and will squeak. Then DAKAR is to heavy, and DEAVER is $900
What did you guys do to you TACO and have you had any issues?

At some point in time, all leafs will be noisy and squeak (AAL, Dakar’s, etc.). I’d stay away from AAL if you’re adding weight because the OEM packs are shit to begin with. Deavers are nice buy costly. I run the old Dakar pack (considered Dakar Heavy now) but I also had to add in the D29XL leafs too. I’m satisfied...
