I thought about that. I would most likely place something on the other side as well to keep that from happening.

Agree with all the other responses. My .02 take care of the tent, rest it square. If the rack can't handle that maybe consider a different one :notsure:?

Another general comment: any kind of overhead storage should have a safety of some sort connected to different ceiling hard points than the primary lift. If something fails you don't want the tent to fall all the way to the floor and crush someone.

We had a little excitment a couple weeks ago when my tent was hanging by temporary rigging waiting to be installed, and human error almost crushed a helper.

I had my tent and rack on my RCI ra little feet for a few weeks with no issues. Even walked on top of it once (very small garage) with no damage to the rack.
But the RCI a little thicker.

Everybody show me some pics of RTTs mounted on a fiberglass cap. Looking to mount mine on my cap soon and move from a rack.

i wouldnt mind a hard shell tent. If i use mine a ton and feel like i need one ill make the swap. The only thing really right now that makes me lean that way is the wind performance.

Im also limited because of my height lol not many tall man friendly.

    Joining the thread (club?)

Went from being one of those guys that made fun of RTTs to quickly wanting one after seeing them in person (and dealing with many, many uncomfortable camping trips in my backpacking tents and attempting to sleep in my previous Softtopper....)

Picked up a Tuff Stuff Delta tent last week for $800 cash by getting it in person from their warehouse in Santa Ana.

Haven't set it up completely yet because of the rain we've been having here in SoCal but looking forward to trying it out this weekend.

I had to orientate it to unfold over the bed of the truck due to my bed rack not being the right width for the mounting rails (they sat just a hair too wide on either side). Was bummed at first but it's growing on me, I can still access the bed of the truck from underneath the tent if I have to.

Don't know how some of you take these things on/off regularly, was a bitch and a half to do by myself and I'm not a small dude. My fiancé tried to help but I'm pretty sure she weighs less than the tent, so it didn't do much.

Yeah I figure I'm going to keep mine on all the time too, I haven't tried wheeling with it yet but I'm doing a test run this weekend before the big Mojave trip next week. Just want to make sure the weight isn't going to be an issue with the higher speed, rough terrain and some 4lo crawling.

My main concern are the 3 leaf AALs I have in the back with my stock leaf pack, I lost maybe 1/4" of height putting the tent on but I don't know how it's going to hold up on the trail...hoping it will get me through the next couple of weekends before I look into upgrading to a better leaf pack.

Yeah I was thinking I might upgrade my bumps at least, don't want to splurge on a new leaf pack just yet but bumps could be a solid compromise in the mean time.

I have the tepui ayer with stock leaf and 3 leaf AAL. I left the overload in and it seems to be doing fine. I don't do any real wheeling though. just some dirty roads and its been fine. the overload keeps the shock from bottoming out.

Yeah I've still got my overload in too, we'll see how it does this weekend and if need be I'll get some Wheeler's bumps

I rigged up an ATV winch into my garage. I lift it off with the push of a button. Realistically, it’s kind of sketch but it works great so far. Ha.

Nice, that sounds like a great idea...I don't have a garage though, but maybe I can rig a pulley system on the tree over our driveway, lol.

This may help with tears in your RTT as well..

Anyone have any fabric rips, tares, holes that need fixing? Decided to get some pics and write a positive review on some repair tape after being happy with the fix. I started to get some small tears and eventually holes in my awning, figured it was getting old and didn’t pay any mind to any cause of the damage. I wanted to get around to fixing it cuz it was getting worse.. Ordered this Gear Aid fabric repair tape on Amazon, says it can repair jackets, tents, sleeping bags etc.. and bonds to a variety of material. Even tho it says no heat needed I warmed up the tape and fabric with a heat gun right before adhearing it. I did an inside and outside patch. In a few minutes when it was completely cooled it seemed super solid and looked like it will hold up over time nicely.
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B001949Z4I?psc=1&ref=yo_pop_mb_yo_pop_mb_pd_t2

While doing the repair I realized what’s causing this..
While on the beach a few years ago a gust of wind flipped the awning up over the truck. I ordered a couple parts from ARB including two new telescoping post. Never realizing at install the one mounting screw for each side needed to be inwards.. one side was in and the side tearing the fabric was out. With trail vibrations the screw head was eating away at the fabric. All fixed now and lesson learned.

While fixing the awning I figured I’d address the zipper. I lost the pull piece on one of the zippers so I replaced it with a key ring. Worked good and thought about cutting the other off and adding a second key ring.. before that the first key ring had already rusted. I scratched that idea and just used paracord. Very pleased with that fix as well. I remember reading @2012Taco build and he added heat shrink tubing to his zipper pulls to eliminate them clanging together.. this solves that as well.
