So i spent the better part of my day talking to leer, are, snugtop, and raider directly. They all told me there canopies are not built to withstand the weight of a roof top tent and a person or more. And all told me warranty is void with a rtt installed or on top of their canopies . This included contractor caps... “ladders and pipe boxes do not weigh as much as an rtt/people” im paraphrasing a little.

The only two companys that told me they had a canopy that will work and still be warrantied are the snugtop expedition and the ARE cxhd with integral exo skeleton.

So now im back to square one. I really want my rtt on a canopy but refuse to spend over 4k on a canopy.
I wish bushtech made aluminum canopies for tacomas!

    End Rant.

I ran a RTT on a ProTop 500 Shell (which is based on the Leer XR). It wasnt reinforced or anything but it honestly held up fine. I would say get bed stiffeners for the composite bed. I sure they have to say that just for liability issues but you should honestly have no problem. If you can afford it get the reinforced roof. Just make sure you rack or cross bars are rated for that much weight. I drove it hard with the tent/shell combo never had any cracks or damage. Ultimatley it is up to you but a ton of people have never had a problem

Sorry for the late reply. I had no issues mounting the tent. Message me if you have any questions

Check out the Cap it brand Buldog canopy.
I have the Leer 100XR and my buddy bought the exact same cap from Cap it for a lot cheaper. I've been told they are made the same and in the same factory.

Other than the Thule tracks absolutely sucking I have had no issues with my canopy. I drive the truck hard and fast.

Heres some pics of truck with Canopy and tent. Also a pic of what happened to my tracks and the new setup with frontrunner tracks. Check my pics for more info on what happened to the tracks here. https://www.instagram.com/p/BmubkXFHhBn/?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet

I just did a reinforcement inside and custom crossbars outside. Used regular ARE cap. Spent 1.5k for cap and 500 for aluminum and fasteners.

Any pics? Im curious what/how u did it. Im not a big fan of the over canopy rack look. But if its clean and can be done with unistrut/aluminum extrusuion i might do it. Been contemplating it.
    Thx

Going old school tonight, setup camp in the dark and rain. CVT FTMFW, that did not suck, especially since the flat spot in this site is a puddle.

I have mine on bed bars. But I mounted an extra set of bed rails to my rack for adjustability. 20180705_132007.jpg
