Your setup looks a lot like what I’m aiming for in the future.

I know this is an old post but , wanted to know your thoughts on having the RTT on the topper. This is the route I’m going. Any issues with weight?

I don't have a topper yet due to apartment garage clearance with the RTT but from past experience, I highly recommend the ARE CX HD or SnugTop Sportsman's package if you go this route. Most caps will hold a bar/rack system (~40-100lbs) lightweight tent (~100lbs) and one person without too much trouble but more than that with frequent use will start to cause damage that builds over time. If you do the CX HD, it already has cross-bars for your tent or you can get some little brackets fabbed up for a FrontRunner rack on top if you want that route. The interior cage is channeled as well which allows for mounting all kinds of stuff.

Thanks for the reply, I actually did a build sheet this weekend on the CX HD solely because it looked to be the beefiest topper. But reading almost every post on here and TW a few people had issues with ARE and customer service and build quality.

Dunno if you priced them but... yeah. I decided I'll be picking up an Alu-Cab instead before our fall trip after we've moved out of this place. The CX HD looks better with the body lines but at this point, I'm favoring weight savings and proven durability given the negligible price difference.

No issues thus far. I have upgraded the leaf springs from medium to heavy. The shell, steel bumper, RTT, and camping gear got a little overweight. Once I upgraded all problems solved (beside the Dakar squeeks)

I can't, for the life of me, get my ladder to lock... Is it user error or possibly a faulty ladder? Anyone else have trouble? feel like a fuckin dip shit hahaha.

Thanks for the reply. No issues with the top it’s self? I think I’m going with the ARE CH HD since it has the brace on the inside. Probably a prinso rack for my RTT.

Are you bunching the extra rungs at the top or bottom? Has to be the top or else it will close itself up and won't support weight. You can either close it up and start releasing them one at a time or just compress them one at a time starting at the top.

this. I do the close it all the way then bring the rungs down while holding the rest up.

Thanks for the vid, I'll try again. I've been doing it just like that, the section of ladder at the top that doesn't get to extend all the way (like in the video, min 1:58) wont lock for me.

The top will bunch up and the first rung will lock about 5-6" from the stack. It's normal from what I understand and should look exactly like it does at 1:58 in the video.

I understand that, i'm saying the half extended section underneath the bunched up part wont lock.

No issues with the top. The family of 4 sleeps up there, so far so good. To be honest, I was concerned at first and did a lot of reading and asking questions too.

It doesn't actually lock in place if you pull outward, it only locks against downward pressure. You basically want a ~30* angle on the ladder and you'll want to lift and push in a little so the ladder is supporting some of the weight of the overhang. This prevents it from sliding out on you to some degree and takes some stress off the hinge.

Edit: 30* is what Tepui recommends but I always err on the steeper side when I have slack to put more weight on the ladder instead of the hinge.

ive noticed depending on overall length or height. I have to get to the closest locking rung and push the ladder in to when it finally sit flat and/or is stable. I start at a wider angle and move to where its closer to vertical. not where it will move slightly up and down because im slightly taller or short than the locking rung.
