Thanks. Do you think bed stiffeners are a must?

Oh and the tent will only be on truck when we go camping, not all the time.

If you aren't wheeling and only intermittent use then I would say no. But a lot of guys on this website will swear up and down it's a necessity to justify their excess spending

I will mostly be on gravel state forest roads and very little off roading just to get to certain camp sites.

You're golden. These trucks are perfectly capable of basic duties-go enjoy the outdoors!

Just got the smittybilt XL 2883 and I had it mounted to kb voodoo short bed TACO Max bed rack. It stuck out almost 2 feet, so I decided to trade it for the smaller 2783 model, which I enjoy using more. I'm sure if i had the long bed version of the bed rack it wouldnt be too much of a problem. The XL was very roomy inside but I usually just go out with my fiance so we wouldnt need that much space.

The material of both tents seem really well made, I haven't been in a CVT or Tepui but for the price I think this tent is a very good purchase. i definitely will change to the longer bed rack later to fill the empty void.

This rack is for sale btw. Just let the truck go and no longer need! Would love for someone to get some use out of it.

    Yeah.
I made my 2nd gen rack from $100 in steel tubing and some angle iron. At the time, nobody made mid-height racks (well, one guy, and it was awesome but super expensive). You can make exactly what you want, and a lot cheaper than buying one. I can't say whether those brackets will work for you, though.

Sumosprings are a cheap fix at $150 ish that worked when I had an RTT set up. The newer versions that have a gap between the frame and the spring dont impact ride quality when the tent is off.

...All lined up, he [Dan] took it slow - careful to pick the correct line to keep his truck out of the hole that'd been dug at the bottom of the ledge. Gravity unfortunately was having none of it and as he inched his way up, it sucked him down. Still, looked pretty bad-ass if you ask me!

Check out the whole story, including all the other trucks and obstacles we ran into:

I just picked up that same tent have yet to use it but its mounted on my truck. I built a rack out of steel that weighs probably 80lbs, never officially weighed but lifted it more times than I please. Between the tent and my rack its probably 220ish lbs. My back end doesn't squat much on stock suspension. This picture was taken this past weekend with 200lbs of tools in the back end as well. (Edit: Tools are against the tailgate and not against the cab so extra weight behind the axle)

I can't speak highly enough of the iKamper, it was a bit more pricey but the quality is excellent and it fits the family of 4. Nothing against the other brands as I have no experience with them.

Another random question . . . for those with fold-out RTTs, which way does your RTT fold out and why (i.e., hangs over passenger side or drivers side). Getting my first ever RTT tomorrow and literally heading straight into the mountains once I get it. Just wanted to hear everyone's thoughts.

I like it on the drive side for no particular reason, I would say its easy to hop out and just set it up but you still have to walk to the other side to take the straps off. Which RTT did you go with?

And mine opens to passenger side for no particular reason. :D Well, actually the original reason was our most commonly used campsite wouldn't allow the tent to be on the driver's side due to the layout, but ever since then I've always kept it opening passenger. I really don't think it matters at all, though.

    Yeah.
I did passenger side in case I need to stop on the side of a road and camp. Never had to do that, but just in case -- don't need the ladder hanging out into the road.

For people looking to get their first RTT, try considering the Overland Vehicle Systems RTT? Here's my little review about their product..
